OK here is a "icky" story. I had an old horse named Casey and his boarding situation was not working out. I wanted to move him back to DH's parents farm, but horses are social and he needed a buddy. So we went on a mission to find a pony. Cheap, old one that would die around the same time as Casey. We found this shetland breeder who had over 150 ponies. He sold us one for $150 because he couldn't get her pregnant. He figured she was done being a broodmare, and while she was one of his best mares (showing and producing) in her day he would sell her without papers to us. We called her Pooh.
Obviously this pony was not in the best of health by comparison to the other ponies on the farm. You could see her ribs (and other skeletal structures), she was out with the other broodmares whose bellies were so full of foals they almost dragged on the ground. So we brought her home first. I wanted to get a vet check on her, and clean her up before bringing Casey home. Health wise she was "ok" (full of worms) but she had...LICE!!!!!! I had to clip her and de-louse her before I let Casey near her. When I clipped her I took a pass through her hair and the lice would run into the thick hair. IT WAS THE MOST DISGUSTING THING I HAD EVER EXPERIENCED!!!!!! By the time I was done I was sure they were crawling all over me. They say lice are specie specific, at that moment it did not matter to me. We left the farm, DH ran into Meijer and bought some 'Rid' we drove into the garage, shut the garage door, I completely stripped in the garage (we burned my clothes) and I ran in and took my shower. It was nasty!
The pony worked out GREAT! We brought her home in April, de-wormed her, fattened her up and she had a foal on July 10. A boy. The vet was shocked! We had NO IDEA she was pregnant. I did ask him too when he first examined her. He was a BIG (6'7";) guy and he was too big to palpate a 10 hand pony, but he said he did not see how she could be in her current state. I think our vet was surprised the colt lived too. I am sure he would not have if we had not gotten the pony treated her for worms gave her shots all the necessary stuff. Casey died in September (2 years after we bought Pooh) he was shy of his 32nd birthday, and Pooh died in November. We sold the foal for $200 at an auction.
