Wonderful Session with the Dog Trainer

Wonderful Session with the Dog Trainer

So yes, to those who know - we setup another appt. with the trainer that no showed - he got back in touch, he had gone to the emergency room and his associate never called us like he asked.  He arrived promptly and Ari was in semi-bratty mode.  I liked watching his interaction with her and took many mental notes, because Ari RESPONDED to it and settled down.  We worked on jumping, since I don't like that behavior nor does my SO and I find it rude in other dogs.  We'll be positioning ourselves so when she jumps she lands in our paws and we hold her there in an up position till she stops whining, then rewarding her with attention when she's in a sit since that's our preference.  It's already working, this morning she was a kanagroo with me, so I did that a couple of time and then twice she went to jump, barely got her two feet off the floor - stared at me, went to do it again then put herself in a sit, which then I rewarded her once all four were settled on the floor.  I got what I want (a dog in a sit for attention) and she got the attention she wanted!  For her biting, we'll be doing a loud OW (which we already do, b/c well it hurts) but making it even more dramatic and putting her in an isolated room for a few minutes.  I should have thought of this in the beginning this is what we did with my Mom's dog when she was a pup and it worked wonders, she definitively not scared from the experience and she learned how to interact with us appropiately since as a pack animal being isolated alone is not fun.  I know some here won't agree with this, but I'm comfortable with it, my SO is an it makes sense to me.  Her biting has gotten better as is, and she's quick to learn when something is NOT fun for her so I doubt this will take very long for her to get it.

He also showed us how to begin to teach her to retrieve which I appreciate since I wasn't quite sure a method to go about teaching the retrieve so it's a new thing we can work on with her!

We also expressed our concerns with recall with my SO and we all got a good chuckle when his advice was for my SO to act "more like a girl" (high pitched very excited voice and be more animated).  My SO is all for it, if it will help matters!  I just want to video tape him squeeling for Ari to come.  Also for my SO to do more fun outdoors stuff with her.

Ari took a shine to him, and I really liked his methods.  He's treat training based which is what we've been doing with Ari since well she'll do anything for food!  Sticks right now are a hot item so we may work on retrieve using sticks in lieu of her tennis balls.  He gave us some other good ideas for yummy chew stuff (never thought to soak a rope toy in chicken stock and then freeze!)

All in all I feel better having met with a trainer.  Ari is getting better and yesterday's session will only help.  It's nice too he has 90 days after a training session unlimited email and phone support.

Oh and I have an emergency call for Ari now that she responds to without fail and gets all excited to do so....I yell out in a very happy tone for my "disobedient puppy" and she comes charging for me every time!  My neighbors probably think I'm weird, but that's ok :)  I had a couple neighbors who were cracking up watching me run away from Ari saying "bye bye" when she was getting too far away from me.  So hey if I make a person laugh AND Ari listens to me - well that doesn't sound like too bad of a day!

Very cool...so glad you had a good first session with the trainer.  I had to laugh with your mention of SO needing to act more like a girl; and how your neighbors probably think you're weird.  Well, join the club.  There were many times, I was acting like a crazy person with my very excitable high pitch voice getting Heidi's attention.  You may look wierd, but the goal is to get the attention of the puppy, and it works...so who cares.

And, the running away (as opposed to towards) the puppy works every time as well.  Certainly don't want to start a "chase me" game...all it takes is once and you are doomed.  Smile

Once, about 6 months ago (pre-good recall) , when on a walk...we passed a cat.  It would have been fine except at the time the dogs SAW the cat, a deer also ran across the road making the cat run away.  My 117 pound LAB and 55 pound GSD took off after the cat, and the leashes came out of my hands.  I called Buddy back, no problem...but again Heidi's recall was pretty much non-existent at that time.  BUT, I called her name and turned around and starting running away from her with Buddy.  She immediately stopped worrying about the cat, and came running after us.  It was beautiful!  Worked like a charm.  There were neighbors out in their yards, and I can only imagine what they were thinking of me running away from the pup.  LOL!

I actually enjoy making people laugh so I got a kick out of them getting a kick out of me!  Plus watching Ari run full on back to me with her tongue lolling out of the side of her mouth and a big sparkly eyes well how can one NOT love a moment like that!  I would never run toward Ari nor would the SO - we'd be doomed for sure!

Besides I am weird, it's only a matter of time before people catch onto my goofy weirdness so better sooner than later!  I cannot wait to see the SO act more like a girl this will be a hoot!

I'm with both of you on who cares what anyone thinks if it works and keeps your dog from taking off and possibly getting hit by a car. I was remembering a previous dog I had (a samoyed) who took off every chance she got. She loved going for a car ride, so I'd call her and jump in the car and she'd come running. I'd sit with her for a minute or so, but we never actually went for a ride and pretty soon that trick didn't work. I wonder what I was thinking Hmm

It's great that your training session went well and it sounds like you were given some very useful information.

First, I want to apologize for swiping these tips since you paid for them!  Wink

I'm going to start doing this with Indie today.  His jumping up has gotten alot better but needs refining.  Did the trainer mention how to stop her from jumping on strangers or does she only do this to you?

For her biting, we'll be doing a loud OW (which we already do, b/c well it hurts) but making it even more dramatic and putting her in an isolated room for a few minutes.

I did this with Woobie when he was a pup but I put myself in the bathroom, away from him.  Worked like a charm!  Worked on Indie's nipping during play as well, or I go away and completely ignore him, he hates that!

What a great idea!  Stealing, I'm stealing it!  Big Smile

I'm working on Woobie's recall right now, will have to keep this one in mind also.  I'm currently just working on it when we're with other dogs that have super recall, hoping he'll learn by example and see that they stay close and come when called.  So far, it's working well, he doesn't want to stray too far from the fun.  Once I've got that down, I'll start working on it with him solo.

Thanks for the info and free tips!  Stick out tongue   Glad you had a great session!

I'm so excited to hear that the session went well!  I know that you've been working so hard on Ari's behavior, and its wonderful to hear that you've all found methods that work.  Keep us posted on how things improve! Smile
