My friend, the one who's parents own the dogs, had to call the police on her dad Sunday. She had a couple friends over the night before that stayed the night. Well her dad came up there and told her that "the trash" needed to leave. The he proceeded to tell her guy friend to leave now. Everyone went outside(kids were still asleep) where the dad took a gun out and pointed it at her guy friend!! They exchanged a few words and the dad shot the guy's tire. Well my friend's husband was at his parents for a few minutes and came home when she called him. They called the law. The law talked the guy out of pressing charges if the dad agreed to go out that minute and buy a new tire. That is our law here. They wouldnt even do anything about the dad pointing the gun at the guy's face.

I guess I'm a big fat chicken, but I'd tread carefully and minimize confrontation with a man who threatens people with loaded guns, in an area in which the police don't take that seriously.  I certainly wouldn't go marching over to give the guy a piece of my mind, and I'm a straight forward person who doesn't shy away from conflict.

If I thought it were remotely possible, I'd suggest moving homes, but I have a feeling that isn't doable.

Edited to add ... gotta love Google.

    Shoot.

    Shovel.

    Shutup.

Truley I have been the Single mom of Two , was putting myself through Nursing school after my Dip Sh** ex husband decided to leave quietly with every dime we had nad two weeks of rects from his employer.... ( at the time I had one on the ground and was fighting not to lose the second)  Any way I was the single mom who coaxed the apratment amnagers into letting me have  a med dog. I was the one who took coffee and cookies down to the hookers who worked the street I walked to get to school.  I was also the one who took a broom to a gun toting drug dealer becase he would not get off of my steps leading up to my apartment.  IT really upset me that I was expected to carry my babies past this nastiness.

I am 5' 7 " in my best shoes.  I am a pacifist at heart but cursed with a temper.  I would not own a gun...  The drug dealer moved because he could not hold his head up around the hookers and users after I beat the snot out of him with my kitchen broom.  Was this the smartest thing I could have done? No... but they really ticked me off !!    Later I  rethought my approach and took the next drug dealer a cup of coffee and the second set of pictures showing him making sales ou side on the steps. I apologised for not being able to give him both sets,, But explained my family and teachers  felt I would be so much safer if he knew that if something happened to me the other set with dates and times would be sent to the  Narc Squad.    I may have been the safest student going to my school.

DOCUMENTATION is the best and most profound correction to any problem. I am up front I get in people's faces but instead of screaming and cursing I offer a cup of coffee and data.... I would spend the next two weeks documenting Every time these dogs left the owner's property.  I would talk to neighbors, I would talk to local vets.... And if the owners was  " resistant' To my type of "charm I would trap the suckers and rehome the nice ones having the others euthanized...yes I know that's stealing...so sue me....

No  You do NOT mess with My kids, dogs or home..... Mess with ME at your own peril Being Irish I live to get even and find the whole thing as funny as possible....

While I understand this sentiment and have had it myself in past situations, I cannot tell you how many times, as a victim advocate, I heard the stories of the guy who finally flipped and how many of these previous warning situations were never followed through on because people were afraid of him.  (Usually a him, not being sexist.)  So then, because no one has done anything to stand up to the big bully, his behavior has gotten more and more belligerent and outrageous and finally, it's not a tire being shot out, it's a person.  So, at a minimum, I would be such a thorn in AC and the cops asses that they would finally get frustrated and make the big SOB do something about his dogs.  I'd call and say the dogs were behaving strange, that you saw them carrying a struggling raccoon (or someone's cat) in their mouths, that there was foam and blood on their faces, etc.  ANYTHING to make it such that AC and the cops don't have a choice but to do something.

If you feel too intimidated to do anything legal, I second the paintball recommendation and the low cost fencing.  I'd also recommend that you ALWAYS be outside with your child and your dog and if you see the dogs approaching the fence, you paintball them so the Mr. SOB will see that someone is shooting at his friggin dogs and MAYBE be worried that next time it won't be paint, it'll be rocksalt, buckshot, or worse.  Of course, if he asks, you don't know a thing and would NEVER have a gun of any type around your precious daughter!!!  Embarrassed   A face full of pepper spray might make them think twice about coming near your house as well and doesn't have lasting effects.

    Good luck!

Ok, I had to do this, it's my nature (and my major):  Just in case you change your mind about pursuing it further.

    http://www.animallaw.info/statutes/stuskyst258_005_991.htm

Under Section 258.235, any person may kill or seize any dog which he sees in the act of pursuing or wounding any livestock, or wounding or killing poultry, or attacking human beings, whether or not such dog bears the license tag required by the provisions of this chapter. There shall be no liability on such person in damages or otherwise for killing, injuring from an attempt to kill, or for seizing the dog.  That same section also comprises the state's new strict liability law for dog bites.  Under Sec. 235(4), any owner whose dog is found to have caused damage to a person, livestock, or other property shall be responsible for that damage.

    http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/Kentucky.htm

    (5) (a) Any person who has been attacked by a dog, or anyone acting on behalf of that person, may make a complaint before the district court, charging the owner or keeper of the dog with harboring a vicious dog.

Now what I see missing here is a provision for a dog attacking a pet.  It seems it covers people, livestock, poultry, and property.  I'm assuming that a person's pet is their property, right?  But given the above (5)(a), there's nothing to say that you couldn't say the dog was attempting to attack you, or your daughter, and your dogs defended you and the wounds to Lilie would be proof of that.  But... anyway, these are some of your options, should you decide to pursue legal remedy.

Hope you don't have any repeat visits, that Lilie heals, and that the owner of the dogs suddenly has an unexpected heart attack!  Stick out tongue

Sorry to hear about your rotten neighbor situation.  Hopefully Lillie will recover quickly.  I have a rotten neighbor problem.  Not involving the dogs but major property damage.  The police here have done little to nothing.  I feel for your situation.  We have been in court three times and this pig has decided to go to jail for 10 days rather than pay us what we won in court which was 300.00.  Not even close to our damages.  I think the rottenneighbor.com website was formed because it is well known that the local police do not want to get involved in such cases unless a murder has been commited.  I have lived in my place for 17 years. Put a new kitchen in last year.  Then this moronic slob moves in next store and has turned our world upside down.  I thought I was having a nervous breakdown from it all.  Ours is mentally ill and a drunk.  Day and night drunk. Bi polar with paranoid stuff.  He sits home and collects my hard earned tax dollars from social security and believe me is very capable of a hard days work.   He spray painted all three of our cars. He has adopted two dogs both who are left all day alone and sometimes without the AC on and often tied to the tree.  Once I cut the rope and took the poor little guy and put him in the garage since he never locks it.  He was so drunk he didn't even notice I got the poor little dog out of the hot sun.   And he has had no tickets, no punishment, nothing!  The police now hate us!!!  For complaining constantly about him and his drunken tirades. His buddy moved in two doors down now and has a pit bull pup who is left loose without a collar on and running around the front yards scaring people.  She is a sweet little pup but people don't know that and if a pit comes running up to you, well people get a bit unnerved about any dog running at you loose.   Anyway I wish I had encouragement for you but neighbor problems are endless in today's world and without local law inforcement's help we are screwed.  I agree that a fence would be great if you can swing something even cheap to keep them off your land.

If they were on my property, I shoot them and then I'd send them over to the 'tough' neighbor. Sorry that BS. I deal with these types of neighbors everyday. My last attack with with a Golden Retriever that went after my dogs on a walk. One bolted and one was fighting off. It was a enough, I chucked that SOB in his yard and the owner clearly watching. And you know, she really didn't see anything wrong. The other dog owners were trying to help.

I have her an earful. Luckily, the one dog that bolted got home safe a quarter mile away. for sure, next freaking dog that tries to do something, I kicking the living crap of out it. Please don't tell me its not the dog's fault because obviously the owner really teach their dog anything so it is as worthless as its owner. That's life.

I deal with neighbors like yours everyday. You'll have cocky and cool male owners with a loose dog and think they have control of it but they don't. You'll the typical tied-out dog and you hear a pit-bull mix so frustrated and hoarse from barking so much. He is really ticked off but the owner things he is just venting. Waiting for the ticking bomb to explode.

That dog traumatized my dog and we didn't know it until our first trial.

I see world team capability agility dogs training and some dogs just get reactive to fast dog and you'll see the owner come out of nowhere and kick the living crap of the offending dog when it comes chasing after their prized position. It is harsh? yeah but it gets the point across to the dog and to the unruly owner who did not do a damn thing to stop the dog!

    How terrible!

I was at a friend's house once and this Golden Retriever just walked onto their property, into their barn, grabbed a kitten in his mouth (their cat had kittens and had JUST finished moving them from her box in their mud room out to the barn, we tried to stop her but she moved all five of them) and shook it to death!  The dad yelled at one of the boys to get a gun and they shot the dog repeatedly with BBs until he dropped the kitten and left.

I just saw this and I am SO sorry! I hope she gets better soon! As for reporting, I would report it in a heartbeat. I don't know where you live but they can't be friends with ALL the cops! Go down to the station and stand there and complain until you get a decent response. I've done it before and it works. You may have to go all the way to the Chief, but you'll still get farther than a beat cop.

Any chance you could put up a fence?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but that was my first thought.  Since you know the dogs are dangerous and will attack, it would seem prudent, even if it does suck for you to have to go to the expense, to put up a fence of your own.  The wire fencing at Home Depot comes 48' high, but you can get it higher if you want, and, even with the metal posts, it isn't all that much money to spend when you consider the trauma to your dog and the vet bills.

We cant move. We just moved here in January. I will be looking at fencing this week. And I will be getting that scarecrow thing too.

We live in a very small town. I think we have like 5-10 cops in this town.

The owners of the dogs actually have done the necessary things for the dogs like spay/neuter, shots, and lisencing. But other than that they have done nothing behavior wise. The only good thing they do about the dogs is put them up at night. During the day though the dogs are nightmares. They go where they want when they please. They terrorize any animal they choose.

I honestly dont know how these dogs have never been shot or poisoned.

I took Lillie for a walk tonight and she was back to her normal self.

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh, I so happy to hear that Lillie was back to her normal self on the walk tonight.  That is very good news.  I know you have a lot to think about in how to handle the neighbor situation.  But, I hope you do get a low cost fence put up asap.

    • Gold Top Dog

the fenced in section for my tortoise cost me less than $20 using posts and some low cost chicken wire type fencing. You'd need a bigger area for several dogs, but it can be pretty reasonable.

My only advice is to keep dogs behind a 6' or 7' chain link or wooden privacy fence.....and never have kittens be a mark for other animals( if available)......good luck to you......sorry, your dog was in a very frightening situation......

While good advice ,it is not fail proof...... look at my incident and Kota's nicely healing scars.          We live in times that require us to be proactive instead of reactive.   Having a 6 foot privacy fence was all I thought I needed.  I now know differently. If you have stray / loose dogs running the neighbprhood, it is not a question of breed. It is a certainty that problems will happen.  Someone will swerve to avoid hitting it...or someone won't and your child will wtiness this cruelty. It will mess in your yard, now we are not speaking of inconvienace and mess we are speaking of transmitting parasites. Your dogs will learn to fence fight.  Once in your controlled environment you now have to have plan B that enables you to get the animal out of your "controlled" space.  If a dog is looking for something to attack or chase it does not have to be a kitten ...it can be the neighbor's cat. , your child, a remote control car,  a bag from the grocery store.... prey driven is prey driven each has a trigger.

This will seem dramatic by example but if you knew you had a sex offended moving in two doors down you would become more cautious and protective.  You would not send your children to play at a home with obvious adult issues, drinking, drugging or the cast from JackA**

A loose dog is a dog who is being required to make their own rules and think for themslevs. If the owner was too lazy to train the dog don't count on the dog being smart enough to know right from wrong.  I would call and report Lassie and Rin Tin Tin if they were running unchecked in my neighborhood.

Bonita, I am not questioning your message.......but, in general a good working fence, and in my case that is tall chain link and privacy fence, can fend off problems that would be a real problem if the fence wasn't there........as for fence fighting.......if I hear a disturbance I do check and see what is going on.......if a loose dog is on my property I go outside and make sure they (dogs) keep their temper down......then I redirect them to another area.......or inside....

In my situation investing the money in good fencing has allowed my dogs to enjoy outside time with no problems.......if you know anything about the ability of Huskies you know how eager they are to go wandering......, thank God......haven't had that problem......

I have a 6' privacy fence that is fine for keeping my dogs in our yard.  Unfortunately we had to install an electric fence at the top and bottom to keep out a neighbors dog.  This dog is not mean just determined to get in our yard to play.  One of my dogs doesn't play well with strangers.  The electric fence cost us around $100.00 and my DH installed and he isn't known for his skills in this area!  I understand money can be an issue but like others have said it's cheaper to be proactive than pay later for damage done.

Glad to hear Lillie is doing better, such a horrible thing to deal with.  We have had our share of scary neighbors and no matter where you move you can still face the same problem.
