Abdominal pain after running?

    Abdominal pain after running?

Since it's Sunday night and I can't call the Doc, just throwing this out here...has anyone ever experienced very acute abdominal pain right after running?  I just ran for 45 minutes on my elliptical.  I had no pain or cramps while running.  I typically run 30-60 minutes so I wasn't over-stressing myself and I did not even get as hot as usual (it cooled off here and I have fan on me).  When I finished, I sat down to check my e-mail and all the sudden got this side cramp, sort of like the cramps you get when running, but a lot more acute, less "achy" than a normal cramp.  Only on my right side.  It's coming and going, feels like someone is stabbing and/or twisting my insides on the right side and sort of comes and goes in waves.  I had some pizza for dinner, but that was like 4 hours ago. I've been running several times a week since Jan. and this is the first I've had a cramp like this.  Ouch!

Can you describe it a little better? Where exactly on the right? Does it radiate anywhere? Is it sharp, dull, burning? Have you ever had pain like this before? Does it hurt when you push in on it? Have your husband push on the area and then quickly let go, does it hurt more when pushing in or when he lets go?

ETA: pain that comes and goes is clasically due to a blocked hollow organ like a kidney stone in the ureter, gallstone going down the common bile duct, or a bowel obstruction. I wouldn't guess from your brief info that you have anything like that but I'd need more info ;) Did you push yourself harder then usual today?

Let's see...sometimes when I get my period I get these VERY sharp pains like someone is twisting or scraping my uterus.  It felt a lot like that, but was not my uterus.  It was about level with my belly button, halfway between my belly button and the right edge of my waist, but the pain sort of moved diagonally down toward my pubic area.  When it didn't go away, I thought maybe it was bad to stop running, so I got up and walked around, didn't feel it when I was walking.  I went into a handstand b/c it sort of stretches everything out, but that hurt so I sat back down.  I did kind of push and squeeze on it initially, just as a reaction to the pain.  It seemed to hurt less if I lied down and stretched out rather than doubling over.

I've never had pain like this before from running, not in that area.  Like I said, it felt a lot like my really acute cramps, but it was not in the right spot and it's not the right time for that.  I didn't push any harder than usual and actually stopped early b/c the elliptical was squeaking (needs some lube), not because I was exhausted.

I don't run tonight b/c of agility class but I will run on Tues and see if it comes back.  I thought maybe it was some kind of heart burn or something, but I've never had heart burn before.

If it started hurting again, i would probably go to the doctor. I'm obviously not a doctor, and have to business trying to diagnose, haha, but you might feel pain in this area if it was your appendix. Ottoluv suggested checking your rebound pain, when you press, and let go...if the pain gets worse. I hope it's just a little cramp and no big deal! Keep us updated.

Yeah that's what I was worried about.  If my appendix was bad, would I feel sick?  I don't feel sick at all right now.

I don't know for sure, but i think most people start vomiting after it ruptures. I had appendicitis when i was about 16. I didn't vomit or feel sick like that at all, but i also didn't rupture. I can't remember exactly how i felt, but i'll tell you i knew something was wrong, and this wasn't normal pain. In the ED, i had no rebound pain and my WBC were only slightly elevated. They wanted to do a pelvic exam, but my mom asked if they could do a CT scan, just in case. That's where they caught it.

I'm not a doctor.  Having said this.

Typically when it's appendicitis, it will start on the right side, as another implied, the rebound pain when you press, it hurts just as bad when someone let's up from pressing on the area as actually pressing.  The pain usually travels to the sternum area.  A fever, writhing in pain, and vomiting usually accompanies this.

It could be a 101 things it could be nothing.  If it continues I would def get myself checked out.  I used to run, I remember my right side cramping I felt like I was being tied in knots.  This happened a couple times then stopped.

Make sure you do a complete cool down!

I almost always get bad cramps when I run, but rarely when doing other cardio. When I do get it, it usually subsides when I slow down or stop though.

I'll be curious to hear if it returns, so let us know.

That's the thing, it's common for me to get them when I run, but this was the first time I got a cramp as soon as I stopped and sat down and it felt different than the typical side cramp.

This isn't really how appendicitis presents Lilith. Clasically it presents as peri-umbilical (right around the belly button) pain that eventually moves to the right lower quadrant. It can be associated with fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. You usually get localized peritonitis in the RLQ that will eventually become generalized after the appendix ruptures. There is no association with sternal pain. There are all sorts of named signs ( rovsings, psoas, obturator) that are also associated with it but I won't bore you with them lol. Liesje appendicitis frequently presents like you are saying so if you continue to have symptoms, the safest thing is to get a CT scan. When you get the CT, it should be triple contrast (IV, Rectal, oral).

    How do you feel today?

Fine, thanks, but I didn't run today b/c we had agility.  I get home from work at 4:30 and we leave at 5:45 and don't get home until 10pm, then it's bed time (right now).  I do run some at agility, but certainly not like 45-60 mins on the elliptical.  I will run again tomorrow night and see what happens.  If it comes back I will press on it and see what that does.

My little sis had her appendix out when she was about 10 after she complained of "tummy ache".  She was in this phase where she'd pretend to be sick (or make herself sick) to get out of school.  Finally my mom took her to the doc, just to prove nothing was wrong, but she ended up having appendicitis or whatever.

Probably off-topic, but I went thru the same thing as your sister and at about the same age. They even put me in the hospital and ran a bunch of tests (upper/lower GI series, etc.). and never really found anything Hmm. I thought I was just an oddball, but my best friend went thru the same thing. I wonder what that's all about?

Anyway - hopefully your pain won't return and this will just remain a mystery.

I used sternum because I didn't know the word for between my ribs, right near my stomach. I thought sternum sounded better than, well;-))))

I had no pain near my belly button, it started, well, right in the V on my ribcage, then moved to my lower right hand side, and hurt like hell!  When I first had this problem I was told it was from drinking too much cokeConfused  it was a pain I'll never forget.

Another question, has the OP been doing this routine for a while or is it new?

I don't run as much as I used to (at least 45 mins 5/6 times a week...now like 30-45mins 4 times a week), but yeah I have been running since Jan.

I just ran for 35 mins and didn't get the cramp.  Tummy feels a little tight, but nothing like the other day.  So I guess it's nothing...
