New 'treat' idea? Mine say it's YUM (Callie)

Yes -- *I* HAVE A NEW PUPPY!!!! (read "Callie scrounging for new ideas for wheat free treats*),

Billy's gotta be wheat-free now ... and I really don't like having to keep tons of different treats around - I want to be able to give what*ever* I give to ANY buddy.

Mine tend to like fruit -- usually cold, sloppy stuff like watermelon, cantalope, honeydew - some sticky fruits like dates, figs, prunes.  I use baby food to give meds (since the pancreatitis, I have to watch fat for Billy *sigh*)

Sooooooooooooooooooooo I'm tryin to keep an open mind.

Gerber "Graduates" Mini Fruits!!  freeze- dried tiny little cubes of banana and strawberry.  These would be awesome training treats -- mine consider them "high value" yummies - they're dry but tiny.  They tend to make the taste buds 'pop' so they won't cause dry mouth.

Hehe my two like these too (as do I lol).  You might also look into alternative grain cereals - Target now carries a number as does walmart, not sure whether they all use wheat or not.  I've also had good luck with frozen green peas.

Callie you can also make a WONDERFUL fruit Bar like a Brownie. My friends all call them Bwana Bars because they are Grain Free.

For our Sweet cookies we do a simple one, I use peeled sweet potatoes baked till tender enough to mash.  Add any supplements I want the dogs to have, I normally use the sweet treats for my calming treats  adding calamine, rescue remedy and st john's wort 20 Vit E capules melted in half a cup of boiling water ,  6-8 good sized sweet potatoes , mashed,  2-3 jars of Gerbers fruits any variety but I like berries for any antioxident effects that may still be there  Some blue berries and 6 eggs .  The Vit E acts as a Perservative.  Everything is mushed and mashed together by hand or in a food processor then pressed into a cookie sheet , these are baked at 375 for about 30 minutes, check them carefully to make sure they are setting up like a brownie but not burning.   Set on the stove for 10 -15 minutes and the cut into tiny bars, pop them in the freezer until nice an hard and then put them into a zip lock baggie.  It makes about 50 -80 small bars and they last in the freezer until the dogs all polish them off !!  I do a HUGE baking day at my place about 4 times a month.

here are the sweet bars then the meat ones which have all of the Joint Soothers ( Glucosamine, Chodroitin and MSM, ) Omegas 3, 6  and 9, folic acid, Flaxseed oil, flaxseeds Organinc cottage cheese, eggs, tumeric and one of the following meats  liver ( boiled and pureeded with beef broth)  Lean Hamburger,( both with a bit of garlic)  or  Salmon and Ground Turkey with Rosemary and Basil .  Then I use boiled Potatoes mashed as the binder. Pressed again in cookie sheets and baked at 400 for 30 -45 minutes. no crumbles are eevry wasted as these treats are high yums and even dogs undergoing radiation for a mouth cancer like my friend's Irish wolfhound who turns her nose up at every thing else will demamd these.  Messy but beyond wonderful for grain free dogs !!

Bonita, thanks for the recipes -- EmbarrassedI don't bake because my kitchen needs HUGE renovation (my oven "bakes" the entire house -- it's 35 years old but I can't get new appliances until we redo the wiring).  Those recipes are keepers!!

I also use Puffins a lot -- another wheat-free cereal I get at the grocery store and they *are* great.  But my problem is that they tend to have to 'stop' and chew and these little fruit bits are fast to eat.

Emma *loooves* Ark Naturals venison jerky strips. They're venison and rice, and have a heavy dose of joint supplements. I also use Redbarn lamb and rice rolls. They're wheat, corn, soy free. They're nice, because you can make them ANY size.

Emma is a brat, and she spits out the mini fruits, but I'm glad you posted this, because the puppy LOVES fruit. Those will be perfect, for training her!

Both of mine like dried sweet potatoes. You can put a little dehydrator on the counter. It doesn't get very warm, at all (I think... 150°? nothing like an oven!). You can do thin strips of meat, apples, whatever they'll eat. It's not super soft, but it's not crunchy, either.

We'll have to try those, they love fruit so I think they'll like those. One of their favorite things is when I mix baby fruit with their plain, fat-free yogurt and freeze in their kongs. I also fill them with baby meat and freeze. Those are longer lasting treats and I normally give them as I'm leaving the house for something. Also the frozen baby meat sticks cut into bite size pieces are good, you can cut them to whatever size you want.
