New Hampshire Residents - Any dog friendly lakes?!

New Hampshire Residents - Any dog friendly lakes?!

Ok, so we are forutnate to have a river with beach area in our "backyard" that Ari is allowed on, but I much prefer swimming in lakes.  However, NH State parks are off limits to dogs and trying to find public access beaches for just humans is a challenge!  Any NH residents here know any dog friendly lake (beach) areas?  We live in Ashland NH and the SO and I are dying to take a day trip to the lake with Ari!

I just want to go swimming with the pup, and the river while deep enough for her to swim and splash around in, leaves much to be desired for a human (not that deep).

The only one that I personally know of is in Goffstown, it's at the base of S Uncanoonuc Mountain.  Very small lake, very small beach, but it's one of the only places I've ever seen dogs and people swimming together.

I used to live in Hampton and we could take our dogs on the beach after 6pm and before 8am during the summer.  But as far as lakes, I think if you find a secluded entry area, not many people will stop you.

This .pdf shows the parks in NH that are dog-friendly - you may have to call each one to find out which have water access areas that allow dogs...

the list might be a little "off" though - I saw something about pets being allowed at the boat launch area of Wellington State Park - meanwhile, I went to the site specific for Wellington and it says dogs are not permitted.  *sigh*

Sadly though, dogs aren't permitted on the beach area of any state park.  They are allowed most places, but not on any of the beaches.

I was at Lake Gardner today which is in Amesbury, MA.   Exit 54 off of 495.  It was very dog friendly.  Dogs aren't allowed within the beach boundaries, but there are trails all around the lake which have remote entrances.  My dogs had a great time swimming!  There were actually dogs on the beach area, but they were swimming outside of the bouys area and nobody minded at all.  I'd highly suggest a trip there!

Amesbury would be a hike for us for just a day trip.  We are both orginally from MA and I know a few waterholes nearby to friends and family that I will take up once I figure out how I'm going to work out getting Ari with me down there for a weekend (my Mom's geriatric dog does NOT like Ari understandably lol - and I typically stay there when I go visit to save $$).  I'm mostly looking for a beachy area so we can spend a couple hours in comfort.  I don't think I'm going to find any in the lakes region though sadly, just driving around a bit last night (went out for icecream) you can't even find public access beaches for just humans.  The SO and I area just going to go off exploring trying to find some.  I'm worried now about taking a camping trip at the end of the month (nothing set in stone).  My hopes were to be able to take off for the beach with Ari swimming, but I'm starting to think NH is not friendly about dogs on their beaches at all!

I go to the Jackson/Glen area alot and there are quite a few places off rt 302 that you can park your car and walk down a short path to the river. I go kyaking there a lot and my cousin brings her dog and we pull up at a few sandy beaches and go swimming.

Thanks!  We'll definitively put Rt302 on our list!  We'll hopefully be getting kayaks next summer so I'll keep that jotted down as well for kayaking spots :)

Ari says thank you and sends kisses - she's really loving the river down by us, but it's starting to get low due to lack of rain, still deep enough to swim and have fun in for her at least!

Tourists complain about dogs on the beaches, so it's less to do with residents than it is about appealing to visitors.  I used to take Gracie to North Beach in Hampton, but ONLY after 6pm in the summer.  During the winter, when no tourists are around, there were plenty of dogs on the beach - especially just north of North Beach - the locals call it Dog Beach because everyone brings their dogs there all throughout the day.

Rivers are easier to allow dogs- there's great camping along the Kangamagus which runs along the East branch of the Pemigewasset.  Go up Rt95, get off in Lincoln/North Woodstock, head East and about 2 miles outside of Lincoln is where the campgrounds start.  Tell me this isn't beautiful - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3/PemigewassetRiverNH.jpg

Pesky tourists =P  I love the Kangamangus and I totally forgot about that campground (been there myself).  The Pemi is right in my backyard (a slow moving part of the Pemi is where we take Ari swimming now it's 5 minute walk from my backdoor!).  Anyone who says that part of NH isn't beautiful just doesn't like nature!

I'd eventually like to get her to experience the ocean so I'll keep Hampton "after hours" in mind for her!

Miranadobe thank you for reminding me about the Kangamagus!

I've been researching dog friendly campgrounds in the White Mountain area.  I found this one which has a dog park right in it, plus a swimming beach for dogs. I know you weren't looking for campgrounds, but thought I'd mention it anyway since they do have a beach for dogs.  I'm going to keep researching other dog friendly places up north before making a reservation.  I've never even considered a campground like this, usually I only go to state park campgrounds, but this one may be worth it.  Here's what they say on their website about dog ammenities:

"We have a special beach for swimming and fetching for you furry guests. Plus, we have some 4 miles of nature trails for long walks through the forest. We have a special fenced in dog park where friendly dogs can run and socialize."

I've been looking through a book I have called the Dog Lover's Companion to New England and it says dogs are allowed to swim at Lake Chocorua.  You'd probably want to call and check, but that's what the books says!

Lillain I could hug you!  I am going to call and check on this today! That's only an hour away (my SO may complain about that but sheesh it's not that bad lol considering he'll drive hours for skiing).
