Kinda embaressing but my vet suggested womens.....ugh cleansing product....ugh that starts with a D. Basically its the vinagaer that breaks up the oil from the skunk but it worked like a charm.

It took me awhile to get over having to buy 6 of them though, I felt pretty odd going through the check out line. Even more embaressing when I said it was for my dog......Oy

Many vets and groomers carry Oxyfresh products:

What I have found works better than anything is similar to what the person at the pet food store said.  I use baking soda, vinegar, and Dawn.   I PROMISE it will work, make sure to leave the solution on the dog for a little while.  I've used Skunk Off and it didn't really do the trick, even after several tries.  Good luck, it makes me gag thinking of how bad the dogs smell after being sprayed.  It really lingers in the house to.

Ahhh, deskunking.... something I know well!

The hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dawn solution works, it really does.  I have personally used it on, literally, hundreds of dogs.  There are several things to remember.  Both the hydrogen peroxide and the baking soda need to be fresh.  Buy new stuff and use that.  If either ingredient are old it will not work.

Next, the dogs will probably have been sprayed in the face.  95% of the skunk dogs I have seen have had a direct hit to the face.  So you will need to to get the solution right up next to the eyes, but not in the eyes.  Use mineral oil in the eyes to protect them.  You can use the solution in the mouth or around the ears.   Then, saturate the dog on both shoulders, since after the dog gets it in the face, they turn their heads to one side and get hit on the shoulder.

You can get rid of most of the smell, but not necessarily all of it.  There may be some stuff in the eyes or in the mouth that you can't treat.  Luckily, the odor in those areas will go away relatively soon.

    Good Luck!

I can't believe with all the critters that has shown up dead on my driveway with Buddy at the helm, we have never had a skunk.  Let me find some wood to knock on...ok, I'm back.

I have had friends that have had to deal with it though...and they bathed their dog in vinegar...WHICH would be worse?  I don't know.  But apparently it works.

Sounds like the hydrogen peroxide cocktail would work well too.

Good luck with your stinky doggies.  Tell them next time to hunt skunk at a more decent hour.  Big Smile

I am a sucker... first both dogs got a bathe with freshly bought peroxide, Basking Soda and Dawn. Worked for the older dog which I am convinced did not get the lions share of the spray. The puppy though had a bath of that and then some genius told me that Downy works. So she had an additional bath of that. She still smells today and she looks like an oil slick hit her back. She might well get anthter bath today, teach me to turn the back light on before I let them out in the morning. Thanks for all of your great help. Lord knows I might try it all!!! HA!

so funny, i was just talking about skunks with the bf the other day. i dunno how it came up, since i have never seen one in my life. actually only somewhat know what they look like from cartoons...

    • Gold Top Dog

HA! She's definitely static free, but I don't think she qualifies as "Springtime Fresh."

And Janet, be thankful a cartoon is the only skunk you've seen!!!!!!!!!

I like good old baking soda, dawn and vinegar.  I let it sit on them for a bit, being careful they don't lick any off or it gets into the eyes.  It'll cut most of the skunk oil off.  However, if your dogs get wet you still may smell it!  Also, did their collars get sprayed?  If so you'll need to deskunk those...though the time my Mom's dog got sprayed we just threw out the collar - too much hassle!  I hate skunks, I used to groom and I remember one epic day I had no less than 7, yes 7, dogs come in who all got sprayed the night prior - the grooming dept. was so stinky that day!  I remember the various owners sharing the stories and misery with each other lol.

7 dogs... sweet Lord I was feeling bad with my 2... LOL... goes to show no matter how bad the situation some one else is getting a shorter end....

The house does smell, the collar (leather of course) smells...

The funniest and maybe good thing is I don't want the pup on the bed, and at 9 months hasn't really learned how to get up there, of course she will, but it's Kale's only place of refuge from her PITA antics... So I go to work very early and my husband stays in bed. I have suspected she sleeps there when I leave, but can't prove it as I am absent.... this morning he got up to go to the athroom and who was speeping on his pillow when he came back.... Ms Stinky!!!! LOL He had to do a whole lot of laundry, pillows and all !!!!!!!!! Case closed! I suspect he is cured from sneaking her up on the bed for a while! Caught in an emphatic way!!!

I don't think we have skunks, here. I've never had to de skunk a dog. My friend lives in KY, though, and her dog got skunked. After she bathed the dog several times, in dawn, bs, and peroxide, she brought Angel here, to visit me. Oy. We went to the beach, and once the dog was wet, YUCK! I bathed her in Nature's Specialties Quick Relief Neem, and it did a little bit. Didn't make it go away, though. It just had to wear off. She wasn't totally skunkified for months. It was mostly... in her ears, I think. It didn't seem to be ON anything. It was so gross. Like the devil's anal glands. YUCK!
