I'm sure there are other talking dogs! Dogs who communicate very well with people. We have one who has a large vocabulary, Powder. When I tell people, the reaction is "Oh,sure!" Even my own mother was sceptical until she saw it herself. Then she wouldn't stop asking Powder questions and laughing so hard at her answers!
Powder has so many different noises so they must be interpreted, but she also was able to mimic our daughter's voice to the extent that my husband would look around, sure that our daughter had spoken. One time n particular where Powder asked for a cookie (homemade bisquit) but was told No, not right now. She plopped on the floor and said "why not?" so clear and with just the same touch of whine as a teenager who was told they can't stay out until 1am.
Over the years, I have learned so much about dog communication. It started with the books by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas such as The Hidden Lives of Dogs. Powder can ask for many of her needs; water, brushing, wants a walk, wants to play a game, etc. But what I find fascinating is how she will take something we say and communicate it to the other dogs. Now that I am home fulltime (I run a business from home), I have seen much more in how they communicate with each other. One of our dogs has never learned to ask to go out, despite numerous training methods. He first tells Powder, who then tells us. We have discussed what to do when Powder is gone and we'll have to put in a dog door in our new house.
Sometimes I take it for granted that Powder can "talk" but when we have new people over, they are so amazed they suggest we put her on TV somehow. No interest in that but it reinforces our opinion that most dogs can communicate if you try to read their body language and noises they make. Maybe not all will have Powder's ability to make so many different noises with different inflections in tone, but I would love to hear other stories of talking dogs.
