UPDATE! Need help! What to wear?

I applied for a job as an evening kennel manager...and I got a call back for an interview. What should I wear? The interview is Monday, and it's supposed to be very warm, plus I have to walk dogs all afternoon (they know this), and I'm going to go right from walking dogs to the interview (they know this, too). The women sounded super exstatic that I am a dog walker because some of my current clients are also patients at this particular hospital (one of the reasons I applied) and Apollo goes there, too! Should I bring nice clothes with me and change somewhere? When I dog walk I usually wear capris, flip flops, and a t-shirt....I actually stay relatively clean for what I do. I have no idea what to wear...the kennel is in an animal hospital.

if it was me, i'd wear my best casual. like if i was wearing jeans, then a nicer, more classier top with it (that hopefully doesnt collect a lotta dog hair from the walk) and nice, but comfy flats... but then again i have actually never interviewed for a job...lol

I would change into a nice business casual outfit after walking the dogs. No need to wear a business suit IMO, but maybe a nice pair of dress pants, or a pair of khakis with nice shoes and a top.

I'd wear normal dog walking clothes then change, that way you don't have to worry about a dog getting you all dirty or something before the interview.

i agree with jenny. I'd maybe go with a pair of khaki capris, a nice top, and some either flats or dressy sandals.

When I interviewed for positions w/ direct dog interaction I always went in wearing a nice fitted polo, khakis, and my comfy but nice looking Dansko leather clogs. Smile

I like that outfit idea! Thank you!

I think so, and apparently so does my boss.  That's what I wore when I interviewed for the behavior position I hold currently. :)  I picked it because I knew they might want me to do some direct animal interaction, but I also had to do a presentation and standard interviews.

When I interviewed for the dog handling job, I wore a nice pinstriped dress pants and a white blouse, and black boots with small heels.  My theory was--show up looking really nice and let them know you're serious, and if you end up having direct dog contact, then you can show that you're so serious about the job that it doesn't matter if you get hair/slobber on your nice outfit.

Of course...I didn't get the job.  But I do have another interview for another opening Monday afternoon.

I just got back from my interview...and...I...NAILED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm 99% I just got the job, but they have 1 other person to interview, but they said I should know no later than Weds. Wish me luck! :)

     That's awesome, congrats!!

You only have ONE chance at a first impression.   Bring the change of clothes,  make them clean and nice but not foofooey.  If you have a breed pin or shirt think about teaming that up with really nice jeans .  I know I would show up with little makeup,  Khaki pants and a white blouse...I must have 20+ white shirts that are dressy enough to look good but at the same time dress down.... remember  you are applying to be Management Not to just walk dogs or clean kennels. Your prospective employer will want ot see someone who is realistic, honest and capable. Not a wild hair,  short skirt  and heavy make up person. The point is to get the position. Best of Luck !!

I got the job but I refused to accept it.

No benefits. No time and a half. No vacation time. Must work all holidays, no exceptions (we travel for Thanksgiving and New Years out of state every year, I was willing to compromise on one with them if it was guarenteed off). The weekend hours are 10am-8pm, sometimes later, and no Apollo is not welcome even if they aren't busy because they don't want to me to focus all my time on him- which I defiantly wouldn't (the only reason I asked was because sometimes Jeremy travels for work and I don't want to leave Apollo home alone from 9am (time I'd have to leave) until 9pm or later because that's too long).

    Ohhh well. Sad

That would have been really rough.  It's a job more suited to high school/college kids who don't have so many needs like insurance or families who live out of state.  As my best friend, the vet receptionionst once said, it really is the hardest job at a vet's clinic and mainly for the reasons you stated.

Hope you're not too disappointed.  Do I remember that you're a dog walker/pet sitter?  Are you wanting to get away from that or just needing more benefits?

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes, I'm a pet sitter/dog walker and money is good there, but I was looking into getting into something a little more professional that involved animals, preferably with benefits since it's mandatory to have health insurance in MA now.

I'm not too dissapointed, but I hate starting back at square one!

Wow, really?  What happens if you can't get it due to cost or pre-existing conditions?  I'm sort of in this position right now.  I'll be choosing jobs based solely on the availability of health insurance.  My ex has to pay for it but it's getting very difficult and expensive to get it independently due to some of my prior health conditions and injuries.
