How did you come up with your dogs name???

I thought it would be fun for people to post that up... was at the dog park and I love hearing that story... Mine:
My bf is a Marine and Jody is an old term for the man who is with your wife while you are away... I know sounds terrible but he is a Pilot and i'm home alone alot so Jody fit perfect.

The first time I met my little fella I went home for a week over Christmas. 2 chewed laptop power cables, 6 pairs of chewed undies, and the 2nd chewed up harness later, I started calling him "the little rascal."

My mother resisted the name at first, but soon she too saw how fitting it was!

That's how we named my cat "Squeaker" as well. Quite the undignified name, but my goodness, you should hear him try to "meow" - he sounds exactly the same as he did when he was 10 weeks old!

From the song "Ballad of Bodacious" by Primus.  The song is about a bad ass bull named Bodacious that doesn't back down from anyone, which fits my Bodacious perfectly.  "A black colored, beefy brawn, full-fledged, four footed canine celebrity" [:D]

I went to the SPCA, saw a little black puppy and took him into a visitation room.  I did all the "good puppy" tests which he passed with flying colors.  I was waiting for my boyfriend to arrive (after a desperate, "I'm alone.  in a room.  with an adoptable puppy" call), so decided to let the little one relax, have a look around - just to see how he reacted to the situation while I would quietly look on.

He sniffed around, then took a look into my purse.  He snuck out a piece of paper, which turned out to be my "OK, you can adopt a dog" approval paper from the SPCA.  In a weird way, it felt like I had picked him and he had picked me back.  It was the sneaky, stealthy way he did it that made me think of a pickpocket - Oliver Twist.  It just fit him and stuck.

Now, if I'd known how many toys Oliver would rip apart (with glee), I probably would have named him "Chainsaw".  [sm=lol.gif]

Jody does fit well! I think that's great.

I don't have a very interesting story unfortunately.  My brother named my husky Dakota (I couldn't think of anything) and I took her middle names from her parents. So, it's "Dakota Tundra Rose". The tundra rose fits her pretty well. The two words are total opposites - Tundra for harsh, cold, rugged and rose implies soft, pretty, feminine, sweet. My husky is all of those things in one package.

I have no idea how I came up with Neiko. I was just running through a bunch of names that ended in 'o' and that popped into my head ;p It fits though and it's fun to say!

Most people think we got the name Schmee from Peter Pan (Smee was Captain Hook's First Mate). The story is much stranger (and longer).

When we first started to live together, when I would do something silly (boil water and forget to put the pasta in, vacuum the same room twice, etc.) instead of swearing, I would say "Oh, schmee." No idea where it came from, but that's the noise that popped out of my mouth. Chris started saying it, too. Then it progressed into the name we would call each other when we caught them doing something silly.

When we got Schmee she was just so silly, she embodied everything that we meant when we were saying "Schmee." And at the dog park, we don't have to worry about her responding to another owner calling her over accidently. [;)]

while the name "rosie" might seem fairly obvious at first glane (see the pink dog in my sig), we actually went through quite a few names before finally naming her after our favorite stomping grounds in portland, ME.  they have a "yankees suck" sign hanging over the bar, how could i NOT love it??[:D]

"varitek" is fairly self explanatory if you know anything about baseball.  if you don't, "varitek" is the catcher for the BoSox, and the team captain.  when we were naming the dog, it was going to be a Red Sox name for sure, but we went through quite a few before deciding that his personality was a perfect match for the player we see on the field- stout and sturdy, never say die, strong enough to take on anyone barrelling towards home plate, confident shot-caller, and quite adept at handling a ball![:D]  since nobody can seem to understand "varitek" unless they know baseball, we call him "Tek" for short.

Blizzard and Drizzle were named after weather because when I picked them up from the breeder it was 105 decrees out and weather was on my mind.  They are both Harlequin Great Danes and Drizzle has dark patches that look like rain clouds.  Blizzard is all white.  I usually pick names for my dogs that are gender neutral.

Caleb is named after my husband's 4th great grandfather- Caleb Washburn.

Prancer's name is self explanatory - if you could see the way she walks (she has a happy little gait) and the way she LEAPS over objects there'd be no doubt that Prancer is the perfect name.   She's named after Prancer the reindeer of Santa's Sleigh Team fame LOL

Shadow already had his name when he was given to us. My personal for him is Pretty Boy, for obvious reasons.

Lucy was called Sadie when we got her from the shelter. We'd already had two dogs named Sadie in the family at one time and I wanted something different. We tried other names that sounded like Sadie and Lucy stuck.

Blackhawk was named after a city in Colorado. We lived in CO when we got him, and a guy my husband worked with always named his dogs after cities in the state he lived in so we did that for lack of any better ideas.

That's how we named my cat "Squeaker" as well. Quite the undignified name, but my goodness, you should hear him try to "meow" - he sounds exactly the same as he did when he was 10 weeks old!

That's funny! We nicknamed our cat Cletus "squeaks" because he doesn't meow either!

I love that song - and remember the real Bodacious as well. He was a rodeo celebrity.

    Good thread topic!

I've never heard the song, but man, that Bodacious was something else.  His bucking ability has come through in is calves and grandcalves.  Thankfully, none of them are as nasty as he was, tho.

I agree, great topic!  I love reading how others came up with their critters names.  The story behind Shmee's name is great.

I name all of my pets after desserts and I try to incorporate their colors. So that's where the names Gingerbread and Fudge came from. [;)]
