I have found a pretty good sized lump in my right breast and I am so nervous and sick to my stomach. I was just at the gyne in April. The Dr. noticed something and said we should probably do a sonogram, but then didn't. I wasn't too concerned because I have felt it there for a long time and was told it was just muscle (this was my left breast). But now this is my right breast and it is pretty big. I am so scared of what this could be. My mom and her sisters (all in their 50s) have never been diagnosed with breast cancer, but their mom was.
So, here I am waiting for 8:30 so that the stupid office opens up so I can make an appointment. 40 minutes to go.
I am only 26 and this can't possibly be cancer, right?? Ugh, I hope I can get an appointment today...
Don't be too worried, a breast mass in a woman your age is almost definately benign. Even with your family history, the fact that they had cancer in their 50's. The worry would be if they were in their 30's or early fourties. In a woman your age, it almost certainly is a fibroadenoma or a cyst. Mammograms are not very useful in a woman your age due to the denisty of the breast tissue. If you were my patient, I'd ultrasound the mass in my office. If it was a cyst, I'd aspirate it. If the fluid is clear, there is nothing else to do. If it's bloody, you send the fluid for cytology and excise the cyst cavity. If the fluid is clear, and it comes back, you can excise it. If the mass was solid (fibroadenoma) I'd do a core needle biopsy in the office. If it is indeed that, you can either watch it or excise it in the operating room. the natural history for fibroadenomas is that they just go away 90% of the time. If you are the 1 in a million with cancer (I seriously doubt it) at a young age, it has been there a long time if you can feel it (probably 5-10 years), so a few days won't change anything. Let me know what you find out. If you have any questions email me ;)
