    Good thoughts for BF please...**updated!!**

What a long afternoon. *sigh* BF is a lifeguard so this weekend was BUSY, busy, busy.

At 5:05 one of the towers called in that they were going on a rescue. There were 3 victims so the next tower down responded, and BF is kind of a 'floater' on an ATV so he responded. BF launched a jet ski for one of the other guards and went back to get a rescue board (a big, foam surfboard). On his way out a big 'set' of waves came in and when he tried to duck dive under one of the waves, his hand got caught in the plastic handle. The tip of his right ring finger is gone.

They found out later that there were 4 boys of them...all family. Our guards saved 3 but one drowned. They did everything right, but it's just the nature of the job, I guess. The one who drowned was only 15/16 years old.

This sucks. He's a guitarist, a painter...right handed. We're going to the orthopedic surgeon in the morning, so if everyone could send their best thoughts to BF and our other guards, and the families that lost their loved one today - I'd appreciate it.

I'm so sorry -- I know he feels bad that the last boy drowned.

This is a tough kind of injury to heal -- there are so many nerves in the end of the finger.  It will be sore for a LONG time, but he will recover MUCH use of this -- he'll have to learn to do some things differently ... but he WILL learn.

Look at it from the positive angle -- it could have been worse.  It could have cut him further down on the finger and he could have lost the USE of the finger (tendon cut) or it could have been the index finger which is used far more.

will have you in my thots and prayers tomorrow for sure -- I'm so sorry I wasn't home when you tried me later.  *hugs* to both of you!

so sorry to hear that! must have been a tough day on both of you!

i agree with callie... it could have been worse. more of the boys could have drowned! your BF's injury could have been worse as well!

    wishing him a quick recovery!!

if it's any consulation, i knew a guy who was missing the tips of 2 fingers and he played guitar like the devil!

will keep you guys in my thoughts!!!!

Thank you all - we're going to the hand surgeon momentarily so I'll update when I get back.

Poor guy, he was supposed to go on a scuba trip to the Keys in 3 weeks, with his work friends. He still thinks he'll be able to go, but I dunno.

    • Gold Top Dog

Why wouldn't he be able to go?  I would think that it is not only possible, but might be good for him.  (But this is the opinion of a stranger, so...)

I hope both his finger and his heart feel better soon.

Well...good news, I guess. No surgery, right now. They want to preserve as much length as possible, so we (*I*) have to keep it super-clean and change the bandage every other day, and he has to go back to the hand doctor every week for 8 weeks. It should be fully healed in TWO YEARS. :( The risk of infection is super duper high - basically from the first knuckle, up diagonally to the bottom of his fingernail is gone. I made myself look while it was unwrapped today, since I'm going to see it Thursday anyway.

He still wants to GO on the trip, but the Dr. said he can't get it wet.

    Please send him our best...
I hope surgery won't be necessary later...

Holy christmas!!  I'm so sorry for the experiences your bf went through today.  Good healing thoughts for both his hand, and his emotions over the loss of that swimmer.  Very sad.

Partial finger amputations are very, very well tolerated. In a matter of weeks after it's healed, he won't even notice it :) One of the hardest things is to keep it elevated. Keep on him for that part, it will really help with healing and prevention of infection. Even in the best of circumstances you can't save everyone. It sounds like he and his colleagues did a great job saving 3 people who would have otherwise died.

    Sorry I missed this yesterday.

My and my crew are sending a bunch of feel better (physically and emotionally) vibes to your BF.  Also glad to hear that he doesn't need surgery atm.
