wyatt scared the crap outta me!

So i come home from work this afternoon. I'm sitting on the couch eating a kiwi and i notice that Wyatt wont stop scratching or pawing at his eyes. I looked at him and one of his eyes was quite swollen. I kinda brushed it off, figuring Kaiser accidentally hurt him while playing. Then i notice hives on his thigh. A few minutes later both eyes are swollen, he has hives all over his arms, and his face is swelling. I went to go buy some benadryl. In the drug store parking lot, he tried to bark at someone, and couldn't. I was like, "oh my God his airway is closing!" i freaked out and called the closest vet clinic. I took him in and they gave him benadryl and dexamethasone ($71!). He seems to be doing much better now.

What worries me is the way he's been acting the past few days. He has only eaten one bowl of food in 2.5 days. This initially didn't really worry me, because Kaiser hasn't been eating much either, and Wyatt still has been eating treats. He also hasn't been peeing and pooping as much, but i thought it was because of his decreased food intake. I told the vet all this, and she didn't seem concerned. She said he might've eaten a spider or something, which is very possible.

He'd appreciate some good vibes. I hope it's nothing more than a coincidence.

    OOOOOOHHHH POOR BABY!!!

Lots and Lots and Lots of good vibes from this part of TX... Keep us posted on how hes doing!

Ohmigosh, how terrifying!  Wyatt - get all the way better, handsome!  Your mom needs to see you eating and enjoying treats!!!

    • Gold Top Dog

Wow, that really is scary and what's even scarier is the thought of what might've happened if you hadn't come home for lunch. Whew, I'm glad he's doing okay and hope the eating picks up soon. Feel better Wyatt!

Ack! Wyatt no scarin the momma person like that!

    The title scared ME!

For what it's worth, Kord has been off his food the past week or so, his water intake was up a bit, but he is acting like the crazy dang fool turkey of a mama's boy he usually is. Outside of looking a bit leaner he is fine body and body function wise.

Allergy wise, could have been anything, creepy crawlies are showing up all over at my house, I put it down to the higher amount of rain we have had recently. And I know Kroger carries a 100 count bottle of their brand of Benedryl, I have them spaced all over the house, not for his allergies, but for mine dagnabit.

You get better real fast Wyatt!

And try and catch your breath Meg!

Oh Wyatt!   Feel better soon boy and stop scarin your momma!

    Allergies are horrible this year.

What kind of food do you feed him?

Has it gotten considerably wamrer the past couple of days?

My dogs appetite always decreases with eat.

Oh Wyatt, do not scare your mama like that!  Don't scare US like that.  Feel better, sweetie!  Tell your mama to give you a kiss right between your gorgeous eyes from me.

Thanks so much guys!! He is doing way better. He has peed x2, eaten a whole bowl of food and pooped since i posted. He also got a NV raw medallion :)  His face is back to normal, but he still has a few hives on his forearms.

It very possibly could have been a spider. We have some freaks that come in my house ( i live next to some woods). A guy comes out and sprays every month, but i still see them. And Wyatt has been known to catch spiders...he has great vision. So hopefully one just crawled in his kennel with him, and there's no larger issue.

AL- He's still on canidae ALS...he's been on it for the larger part of his life. And it's actually been cooler here lately...it's 63 right now and raining, where it's been in the upper 70s and warm.

Who knows, but i'm glad he's okay! Kaiser's not helping too much though...he keeps trying to wrestle.

I'm glad that Wyatt is doing better!

I suggest that you keep both both Benadryl tablets and liquid (with syringe) on hand - along with written dosage info.  The liquid acts faster and is easier to swallow.  Tablets don't have a sweetner and just aren't as messy when the dog isn't cooperating.

The normal dosage for Benadryl is 1-2mg/lb of body weight 2-4 times/day, but you can go up to 3mg if the airways are closing.

CAUTION:  It is not in the product currently, but always check  the ingredients for Xylitol before buying a new bottle of Benadryl.  Xylitol is a sweetner that can kill a dog.  It drops their blood sugar and damages the liver.

Xylitol is a common ingredient in "sugar-free" products - mints, gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, cookies, cupcakes, etc., etc.
