Legit rescue?

    Legit rescue?

Just curious, so I thought that I'd see what the folks on this board thought. While looking to see how many Borzoi there were on Petfinders, I found a number of dogs listed with www.gentlegiantsrescue.com. Several months ago I had come across the same place as a link to another site, and I checked it out. This place really raises some red flags for me!

Look at the number of rare breeds. Look at their adoption process. Look at the sheer numbers!  Whatever you want, they can get it for you, not the usual, "here are the dogs we have available". So, what do you guys who are active in rescue think?  I hate to be suspicious if they're a legitimate rescue organization, but their website reminds me of some puppymill sites, ie; "all dogs are house pets" but they have a hundred dogs.

I'm not in rescue, but I've seen a ton of legit rescue websites and this one really irks me for some reason. Maybe its the flashyness of the site itself, maybe its the large number of available puppies, or maybe the lack of pictures of the dogs that are available to be adopted....I'll have to go check the adoption process now.

I suspect the dogs on the site are dogs they bred or bought to adopt out. It certainly isn't a shelter or a typical rescue. Of course, now there are plenty of shelters/all breed rescues that are buying dogs and adopting them out for high fees as well.

Hm, hard to say.  They are a 501(c).  They don't ship and they say they wont adopt certain dogs to anyone (" Borzoi, Scottish Deerhounds, Saluki and Silken Windhounds are special breeds that are only available for adoption to people who have previously adopted a dog from us.";).  But $490-$990?  Come on....  Also even if they are legit, they have annoying blanket requirements such as...

    • Our dogs are adopted only as personal companion pets, and are not adopted to provide any form of work.
    • Do not allow crates beyond house training (how could they even tell?)
    • If you are away from your home more than nine (9) hours a day, we cannot adopt a dog to you (not that I totally disagree, but how can they tell?  What about 10 hours one day and then three days home?)
    • We adopt our dogs to live with their adopters in single family homes with fenced yards, and in condos, townhouses, apartments, and mobile homes without fenced yards. (so, a mobile home with no yard/fence is OK, but a home with an un-fenced yard is not?)

Seems there are 2 sides to this story. I haven't formed an opinion, but it is curious.

call me cynical, but there are so many reputable rescues and shelters that when i see one that is questionable.... i just move on.

this one to me seems questionable.

Ok, I'm just older than you guys.  GentleGiants has been making people go "hmmm" and love them, hate them, love them, HATE them for years.  It's Burt Ward and his wife ... ok, even you "kids" who grew up on Nick-At-Night SHOULD recognize that name

"Holy Dog Collars, Batman -- it's ME ... ROBIN!!"

Yep -- he was the TV "Robin" to Adam West's Batman.  This is pretty much a business with Ward and his wife and he's not above capitalizing on his name to place dogs.  It's Hollywood meets dog rescue and frankly that's about the name of the whole thing.  He is what he is ... it's smarmy,  it's entertaining, it's ... rescue ... it's a business ... it's ... yuck to most of us.

when i read that name "burt ward" i wondered if it robin!

There is a website dedicated to "disclosing the truth" about gentle giants.  I remember reading the testimonals a few years back and they were scary.  Check it out the stories are sad.

I saw them on Animal Planet Pet Stories- adopting out Great Danes.  They had these giant dog houses and kept them all together, fed them all together, etc.  The wife seemed like spastic mental case - overly animated and excited and juiced up.  It was weird.

Thanks for the responses. I had to get off the computer for awhile, and couldn't read this sooner. I thought something wasn't right, but it seems they're worse than I ever could have suspected! I'm not interested in adopting at this time, I've just always dreamed of getting a Borzoi someday.

Isn't it odd that a place like this continues to exist, and appears to be getting worse every year! It scares me to think that I almost gave a friend information about these people as she loves Danes, and is originally from Norco. Thank goodness she found a puppy close to where she lives!
