Good vibes for my cats - positive update!

Good vibes for my cats - positive update!

Moose & Missy are having dental maintenance done today - cleaning, scraping, etc.  They are anesthetized for it, so that's the biggest risk (I think).  Just wanted some good vibes for good results & coming through no worse for the wear.  Thanks!

Oh so many good vibes for your babies!  Please let us know how they're doing & give them some butt scritches from me.

Good feline vibes for Moose and Missy as they undergo their dentals!!

They came through okay.  I was a little upset that they gave them vaccinations at the same time. Yes, Missy was due for rabies, so they gave her that and both of them got the distemper combo, which I was going to skip a year for both.  I had forgotten when I took them in to tell the vet not to vaccinate and when I got there to pick them up and found out they did, I told the vet I wasn't happy about it and they should have called me first.  Then I found out it wasn't my regular vet who did the work but another vet who is doing an internship at the office.  Argh  Angry

    Anyway...

Missy is pretty groggy - I was worried all night, but this morning she is moving around okay and was purring when I was petting her.  Didn't eat though.  Then I looked at the report and realized she had a tooth pulled, too.  She did drink some water and went pee.  Do you think I should give her some chicken broth or maybe pedialyte to keep her energy up?

Moose seems okay - he ate last night but not this morning (I don't free-feed).  I think he is out of sorts because he likes to cuddle with Missy and she is hiding in a box.  Hopefully they will both feel better in a couple of days.

Big drag on the unexpecteds.  If she will, I would give Missy some chicken broth. I'm sure it is the combination of the tooth pull with the other stuff that is making her a little stand offish and keeping her from eating.  I just think if you can get a little something in her, like the broth, she'll regain her interest in food sooner!

    Feel better soon, Missy.

I wouldn't worry about it for the first day or two. Many kitties still feel 'under' for the next 24 hours. My kittens don't eat until the next day after sugery.

I would offer only canned food - that's what we did with my cat when he had several teeth pulled - no hard food for the first week. He didn't eat all his food, all the time - but I think he was much more upset with being stuck in the back room, that anything.

I appreciate the replies.  I suppose it would have been helpful to say I don't feed kibble - they only get canned, raw chicken or chicken liver, or partially cooked chicken or turkey.  I was under the impression that it isn't good for them to go without food more than 12 hours.  I guess if they were wild, that wouldn't always be possible though.

I've not got as much experience with cats - have had them for several years, but feel like I don't always know if something is "wrong", maybe because they are stoic to begin with.

haha - cats will eat when they are hungry..... mine always do. Maybe not as much, but I've never met a cat that will starve himself!

Maybe try only giving the real mussy canned food - mixed with a bit of water. His mouth may be a bit sore, so any sort of chewy pieces may be too much for him right now.

As long as he keeps drinking water and using the box, I would not be too worried =]

I agree that the drinking is the most important thing. I lost my last cat due to a dental cleaning (or the anesthesia). She just never seemed to come out of it fully and they kept her to get IV fluids in her. She ended up having a seizure and dying at the E-vets 2 days after surgery. She was only 7, so it was a huge shock to me. I'll always wonder if I shouldn't have insisted that I bring her home, but maybe it wouldn't have mattered.

I think some cats can get habituated to not eating when they have undergone some trauma (not that I'm suggesting dental work is necessarily traumatic, but the whole enchilada of events adds up).  Cats are emotional creatures and sometimes become sort of anorexic - I think this is more common with felines than canines.  And liquid is vital to her, so broth kind of suits both needs.  Gets some calories in her and liquid too.  And it might stimulate appetite.  You can try the most pate style cat food you have and add a little water or broth and even warm it slightly (seconds) in the microwave to increase the aroma!  Baby food is an option, too (the meats - turkey and chicken).

Great news!  I got home from work last night and Missy looked 100% better.  She'd bathed herself and wanted to eat.  She managed a little bit of Evo canned chicken/turkey, which is great because it is already really mushy.  This morning I opened another can and gave her the juice that sits on top of the food, plus a little food.  She licked it all up and then stole a little of Moose's food (he had same thing).

Yay!  Thanks for the advice and good thoughts - everyone!

I'm so glad to hear that Missy is doing well.  Give both Moose & Missy some chin rubs from me.

    That's great news Tina!!!
