How To Spend Your Rebate Check

Got this e-mail from brother-in-law today and thought ti sounded about like the truth!  Had to laugh at it, tho.  Just remembering how I went thru heck trying to gt instructions for setting up my computer from India!

How to use Your IRS Rebate check

As you may have heard, the Bush Administration said each of us would
get a rebate check to stimulate the economy.

If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China.
If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs, if we purchase a
computer it will go to India, if we purchase fruit and vegetables it will
go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala, if we purchase a good car it
will go to Japan, if we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan and
none of it will help the American economy.

We need to keep that money here in America. One way to keep that
money here at home is to spend it at yard sales, since those are the
main businesses still in the US. Help your neighbors!

I'm hoping people will take at least $200 of it and put it in savings. That's peace of mind.

We're so controlled by the Wal-mart philosophy - it's scarey.

Mine will be direct deposited to checking, where I'll transfer it on-line to savings ... and there it will sit until I get the closets cleaned out so I can get to work on replacing the carpeting. I was just watching the 6 p.m. news and they were talking about the checks and the economy in general and they said that the average American has four major credt cards and is carrying nearly $17K of debt on them.  That's a scary statistic.

^^ That is a scary statistic, but i can believe it.

My rebate and my refunds from taxes this year are going into savings, hopefully they will be used toward a house down payment in the next 2 years.

We spent about 1/3 of our income refund to do some repairs aroudn the house, the rest into savings.  We plan to spend about 1/2 of the rebae check on more imoe stuff, save the other half.

Holy crap!  We have two.  One of them I got when I purchased my laptop, and I've never even activated it or peeled off the sticker.  We use DH's sometimes, but it never carries more than a few hundred in dept, and usually it's paid off in full within a month or two.  We do have close to 100K in student debt though, with interest rates ranging between 4.6-10%.  Yikes.

DH wants to get a new TV with ours but I don't think he realized TVs are super expensive and we can't afford one any bigger than our current 19" CRT, it would just be an LCD instead.  Ours will probably go into savings since DH got his Wii and I upgraded my camera already.

My mom is really excited b/c she's getting carpeting in her living room.  She's hated the carpet since we moved there, which was 12 years ago.  Our house is very small so she'll probably have some left over.  I can't remember the last time my parents spent money on a home improvement and we've had the same furniture since I was little.

Ours is being used to buy a new breaker for our house.  Apparently our current one is a fire hazard.  We regularly put a good amount of money into numerous different savings accounts designated to numerous different causes each month.  Instead of taking money out of savings to pay for the breaker, we decided to use this money to pay for the breaker.

I'm keeping my measly $600 local.  Monday I spent $114 at the vet for Bear's heartworm test, meds, and an ear check.  Next week the cats are getting dental cleaning at $90 each (two cats) and the older one has to have a complete blood work-up before they will anesthetize her, so that's another $35.  Barring any other issues, that's another $215 spent.   I'll be left with $251, but since the only debt I have is a mortgage and a car payment, the rest will go into savings for a rainy day.

The best thing that any of us can do with that money is to pay down our debt.  It may not help the economy, but we've got a debt driven economy.  The better you are at paying your bills, the more debt you can sign up for.  Pay off a credit card, make a double payment on your car, pay off something.  It's going to get worse before it gets better, and frankly, the CC companies are getting more power as are the banks.

I agree, DH and I each have our own savings account and I managed to save quite a bit in mine, his...well I don't know cause I don't look at it but here's to hoping he's saving some. We decided we are going to use the full amount we get to pay on our new bedroom set and kitchen table we bought a few months ago. It will take about half off that credit card which is a good chunk.

i am thinking of making a secured investment like a cd or something like that. it isnt going towards something material though.... it is going into sometype of savings or investment account.

I wish we could save it. However with the big credit card bill for the car repairs a year ago and Teddi's hip we need to pay those down. Our refunds went there too.

Ok first of all how do they determine who gets a check? How much income do you have to have made? Also it said the direct deposits will start first. I had my other rebates on direct deposit, but have since moved out of state and closed that bank account. Will they just send it in the mail then? One more question...How do they determine if you are a couple? We did not file together, but I have the box check for married but filing seperetly.

Sorry so many questions, I'm super confusedHuh?

by law those stimulus checks that cant find their rightful owner are coming straight to me. i will disburse them as i see fit. i am willing to listen to any sob story for consideration.

I'll be spending mine paying my quarterly estimated taxes.  I like the idea of sticking it to The Man that way.  I know it's just a mind game I'm playing with myself, but other than my vacation to CA, I'm trying to be as frugal as I can and only put $$$ into my house to improve my equity right now.  I've got tuition to pay for summer classes and an important academy to attend, so I'm not looking to waste money when most of it is going into my gas tank these days!

BTW: zatchbell, I LOVE Lex's scruffy terrier face!!!  I haven't seen it before, ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE!!!
