    Oh No - Update

Monday I called a shelter to see if they were still excepting adoptions papers on a dog that I found. Yes they were but she said that they have already received a lot of applications for her and will go thru them maybe at the end of the week. So yesterday I faxed them my filled out adoptions papers. Today I get a email from them. Oh no I couldn`t believe that they would reject me so quickly. I`m afraid to open the email up so I ran and got my papers and reread them so see what I could have said that would have been so bad to be rejected so fast. I was totally truthful filling out the forum so I guess I will just have to live with rejection I guess.

I opened up the email thinking the worst. Woo hoo I`m still in the running as they emailed to tell me that they only received the first page of the application and not the second page so could I resend the second page to them.

Of course I know I still can receive my rejection notice but at least not today.

    Man I hate stress

you have guts! lol i dont like competition much , i dont know if i could compete for a dog in that manner. i dunno if that makes sense.. i guess something like "well someone else has their heart set on this one. lets see if i can find one that no one else wants"

and i'm not faulting you in anyway Smile i really do hope you get to be the lucky one that gets to bring her home forever Smile

First of all thank you AuroraLove and DumDog for your support.

So I faxed the second page again about 10 min. after I got their email. So I wait. Its now Mon. at 3:30 pm nothing. I know that they took the dog off of the adopt list Sat.night. No email no phone call nothing. Now I`m wondering if the second fax when thru. The reciept that the bank gave me said it did. I asked them when I talked to them on the phone if they contact everyone who filled out a application to let them know the out come. Yes they said that they did. So now what? If they felt that they found a better home for her than with me so be it but gee at least let me know. So do I wait - if so how long? Do I email them? Do I call? I realize that I do not live real close to them and I would have had to drive to go see and pick her up but I was willing to do that and said so. I asked one of my references that I put down on the papers and they said that they never even got a call. Maybe I asked to many question about the dog before I filled out the adoption papers. I think it is good that they ask you many questions to find out if your home is right for the dog but I feel I should be able to ask questions too. Like why the dog was surrendered, any health issues that they know of, if the dog gets along with other dogs, etc.

I now know why a lot of people go to pet stores, ads in the paper, etc. to get a pet. We have been looking for another dog for a companion for Molly and us what seems like forever. It started long before I posted anything on this forum about getting another dog. After being on the forum and learning so much I do want to adopt but it seems like it is not going to happen in my life time or Mollys or DHs either. Either they don`t adopt out of state, or just a few states around them, and some are just so many miles from the rescue or shelter or you have to drive to eternity to see them as you have to appear in person. The breed, age, sex is not here in my state and I changing that daily still nothing.

I do have my name on a breeders list but I really want to adopt a dog instead of getting a small puppy as Molly is just growing out of the puppy stage. But I will do it if I have to.

Ironic if a shelter doesn`t think you are good enough to home a dog but a responsible breeder does.

Have you thought about going to a city/county shelter? Animal-control? They're usually really lax..walk in, pick the dog you want, pay the adoption fee, walk out.. There's a lot to be said about the really good rescues, but they do make you jump through a lot of hoops.

It's worth a try! I think typically the small dogs tend to go fast from "the pound," but it's worth a shot... what rescues have you tried? Have you tried breed rescues? Have you talked to breeders about getting an adult dog? Maybe you could find a situation like Liesje did with Kenya?

Hope you find something, you must be super frustrated :(

Please understand that alot of the work is done by volunteers who have jobs, families, dogs of their own, etc. so the wait may not be related to you at all.  And while you might not be chosen for this particular dog, that doesn't mean you're "rejected", you might be considered to be a wonderful home for another animal that you might be interested in their facility in the future.  Most places try very hard to come up with what they believe is a fair process to decide when there are multiple applications for a single animal.  Some places will consider every application received and try to choose the very best home from all of them.  Some will process them in the order in which they are received and place the dog with the one which is received earliest that they consider to be a good placement.

Please don't let this drive you to the extreme of going to a pet store and giving up on adopting, I know it's frustrating and the waiting can be awful when you're hoping for a particular dog but please be patient and know that they are trying to do the best they can with the resources they have and for the animal concerned.

I do check the city/shelter/ animal controls closest to us everyday. I checked petfinder everyday + other places. I own a business and DH does too so I can`t keep spending my whole day (which I have been doing for a long time) looking for a dog to bring into our house. I ck rescues and shelters both ((everyday)). But I can`t keeping going on like this. I want a companion for Molly and DH and I and get on with our life. This can`t - will not be a life long search.

Edited to add The closest place that I have found to adopt on the spot is 5 hours away from me. I lost a dog because I didn`t know that you could put a deposit on the dog over the phone to put it on hold for 48 hours. So I miss that one. Now I know better there but when will they get the dog that I want????????? So here we go againl

I think it's true that they tend to go quicker, but.. the OC shelter is usually FULL of little dogs (right now there are 20+ chihuahuas or chi mixes on the website..several mini schnauzer mixes, a few toy poodles/mixes, a few cairn mixes..), so I think it also depends a lot on where you live.

Mollymoo, maybe check out petharbor.com. They tend to list shelters and "pounds" wayyy more than petfinder does.

Edit: posted at the same time. What about craigslist? Probably not the ideal place to find a pet, but much better than a newspaper or pet store puppy, since craigslist usually only allows personal rescues or rehomes.

This is exactly how I got Max. They asked me a few questions such as did I have a fenced yard and who was going to be responsible for his care.  The only extra step in there was that they sent him from the shelter to the vet for the big snip and I picked him up at the vets the following day.

Molymoo, I had pretty much the same experience as you dealing with rescues when looking for a small dog.  Long waitings lists, no response, beat out by others because I don't have what they consider the perfect situation for their dogs ( no fenced yard, I work full time).  Even if I did eventually get chosen I still have to agree to have a stranger come into my home to judge whether I am fit to adopt.  Not only is that invasive (IMO, I understand why they do it and that others may feel differently but personally it turns me off) but it adds more time on to the process.  It got to the point where I said, forget this, and did end up going to a breeder.  I'm not saying that's what you should do, but that is what I did and if you do go that route, reseach breeders very carefully.  Many breeders have adult dogs that are either retired show dogs or didn't pan out for their showing or breeding program for different reasons (confirmation didn't turn out as hoped, lack of confidence in show ring etc).  There are lots of dogs like that who need loving homes with just one dog to play with, just as much as the rescues do.  Good breeders will ask lots of questions too so be prepared for that.  And I'm sure you know to stay far, far away from pet stores and newspaper ads.

It also might help to talk to the adoption coordinator at these places and some rescue groups and explain to them in detail what you are looking for, ask them if you could go ahead and put an application on file with them and then if a dog comes in that fits what you're looking for they can contact you right away and because you already have an application on file, you'd be first in line (if that matters in their process).  You might also fax a little letter that explains who you are briefly and what you're looking for.  Keep it to one page and fax it because then they'd have a printed copy rather than an electronic email sitting in someone's inbox.  The fax might be posted up where everyone can see it and they can call you if something comes in.

I felt a little like you did in being anxious to get the search over with when I'd decided I wanted a companion for Woobie.  I got discouraged when 2 dogs we met didn't seem right and I did feel a bit of a pull to just say yes and get it over with, but I took my hesitation as a sign from above that the dog that was right for us wasn't ready yet and I tried to be patient.  Indie came to me under very unusual circumstances and not in the way one would hope for or expect, but one look in that face and I KNEW.  The wait was worth it because he was the one meant for us.  Just take your time, the dog that's meant for you might not be on its way to you just yet.  When it's right, you'll know, trust me.  Wait for the sign.  :)

Mollymoo, have you filled out this application:

http://www.lhasaapso.org/owners/puppyap.html - it'll send you rinfo and what you are looking for to all the members of the American Lhasa Apso Club.

And here's their national breed rescue:

    http://www.lhasaapsorescue.org/

They do some limited transports, but I don't know what area of the country you're in so I can't tell you if they'v egot any dogs near you or not. I *can* tell you they don't show up on petfinder, at least some of them.
