    Cornfed Gas Hogs?

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24380271/

according to that article we're no better than before using corn to fuel our cars. in fact they say things could get much worse as a result because now food AND gas prices have gone up.

    thoughts/opinions?

most of my animals are grassfed but still..... its shocking how much corn is used in almost everything we eat and drink. much of it is wasted in junk food or used as sweeteners or fillers in over processed food.

and the other thing that occurs to me is the obesity rate in the US.... i know people point fingers at "laziness" and "bad dieting habits" but i am starting to wonder if the other factor is all the corn we're eating. think about it.... they use corn to fatten pigs, cattle, and chickens.... could it possibly be fattening us as well?

i first heard of this theory about a month ago when i got a couple of magazines in the mail called Mother Earth News and Hobby Farms. since reading those mags i've since been looking closer at the food we buy and have gone out of my way to get stuff that doesnt have corn type byproducts in it.

no more soda's. its either water or tea. no more junk food type sweets. and of course no more dog food Wink now its apples, fresh veggies and meat. i know that might be hard for a lot of people but it wasnt that hard for me. probably due to the fact that i'm not swallowed up into a big city. plus i'm home all day so i have time to prepare fresh food to be eaten. we dont really like canned or frozen dinners anyway...

anyway..... thats just what i've done. anyone else doing the same or even noticed this?

We try, we really try hard to eat veggies, meat, and fruit and cut out all the crap. But usually its hard, we can't always afford to eat healthier or better due to the prices anymore. Alot of times we do end up buying the crap because its cheaper and will save us money, but I do believe that is what's contributing to me not being able to lose much weight.

i've been there before... surviving off hot dogs and Krap Mac n Cheese... which is why i try not to complain too much about the downside of country life. the internet is just about my only connection with the real world... its too expensive to have any real kind of fun. but the perks are i have veggie gardens all over the place and raising my own meat. instead of planting flowers in the bed beside the house i put in a couple rows of corn and some garlic, onions....etc and so on. i even have potatoes growing in beds made out of old tires lol and i have planted tomatoes and straw berries along the fence line out front. i got to eat one of those strawberries the other day and man it was gooooood! better than anything you'd get from the store!

the other biggest perk is we have wild blue berries all over my backyard. everyone, including Kaydee - the other dogs dont like them - are out eating berries right off the bush. we also have a mulberry tree - they're like giant super sweet black berries.... just dont park your car under it!!

those things i've listed could be grown in our modern day suburbs and even in cities if people really wanted. i like flowers and pretty beds but i like free food better lmao! i'm not much for aesthetics... might explain why i own what many consider to be ugly dogs Big Smile

*LOL* I always cringe when DH asks if I want some mac n' cheese with my chicken sandwich. He loves that stuff and buys a ton of boxes at a time, but I just can't stand to eat it anymore.

I would love to start some type of garden, we'd have to fence it in really good though because we have so many deer, rabbits, raccoons, cats, and who knows what else that roam around that everything would get eaten. Strawberries and really any type of berries sounds soo good!!
