Uterine Fibroids?

Ugh. Anyone have experience with these? It's suspected that I have one/some, but my ultrasound isn't until Friday after next. I'm having pain and very heavy periods and am pretty miserable. I was given 800mg motrin twice daily but still having breakthrough pain. My uterus is twice the size it should be.

Since I'm done having kids (although considered pretty "young" at 31) I am not opposed to hysterectomy. I would just like to feel like a normal person and be done with the pain and PMS and depression and have less than one week per month where I feel decent.

So just venting here but would like to hear if you've had experience with these and if treatment left you feeling better.

I had these about 8 years ago, I had an ablation done and my tubes tied since mine were small but plentiful. 99.9 percent are cancer free. All was done outpatient and I was back to work in 2 weeks with limited duties.

I would follow your Dr.s advice, I do suspect that I have a couple more again, if I do, this time the uterus is gone gone gone!

Ironically, myself and my sister both had large uterine fibroids. In both of our cases, we had them surgically removed. In all likelihood, an MRI will be done in addition to the ultrasound. In my circumstance, the tumor was very large, which took away the option of taking meds to shrink it. The meds are serious stuff so be prepared explore all options for treatment. I had them removed about 8+ years ago when I was 34ish. PM me with any questions, if you would like.

Of course, I'm the queen of overplanning, and jumping to conclusions, but if it is fibroids, I think I would just rather have the hysterectomy (leave ovaries) so I can be done with the 9 day periods! I HATE that!

I have a month yet then for the followup appointment and she put me on progesterone only birth control pill to try to shut down teh ovaries, so I won't ovulate and have a period (yahoo!) but I dont' want to be on b.c. for very long.

I've known a couple women who've had the ablation done and were thrilled with the results and the ease of the surgery and recovery.

I personally think that embolization is the way to go, coming from a surgeon who likes to operate that should say something hee hee. The problem is that not all centers do it and many Gyn's will recommend surgery even for those that are able to be embolized because they don't do it. Some fibroids are not able to be treated this way so you will need to go over the U/S with your doc to come to the best decision for you. Condaleeza rice had her fibroids embolized ;) Here is the website for my hospital for some basic info (not advertizing, just knew we had a page on the subject since I saw the posters around last year).
