    Deer Antler Chews

Naturally Shed Deer Antlers, Yay or Nay?

We just got them in at the store, boss ordered them and they say they are great for dogs that like to chew, don't splinter, etc. but I wanted to see if anyone has tried them before and what their thoughts were.

I use them with Jezzy and Keela and I love them - as do they. :) Though what one has, the other wants, so even though there are 3 laying around - they trade one off. LOL I love that I don't have to worry about them chipping off or getting icky all over the carpet, as well as the girls don't have to stay in their crates to chew on them. I use the dremel to rough them up if the girls lose interest in them. They get 2 thumbs up from me.

I have heard good things about them.  I will be trying them out as soon as I can find some locally.

My dogs would love these! I've never heard of them, I will google to see more info than keep an eye out at the local stores!

I'm interested in seeing how they work.  I have many friends who hunt deer.  I have put out the word that if they have any spare antlers, I want them.  I'm just wondering if there are any parasites I need to worry about?

I've been reading that since these are so hard some dogs are having problems with their teeth when they chew, one person said their dog cracked a tooth.  That makes me slightly leery.

Antlers tend to powder up before they'd be too hard to crack a tooth...I'd be surpised to hear a dog cracked a tooth on an antler.

People here tend to sell the antlers from their moose to Native carvers. I'm having a hard time getting antlers for my two, even though I live in Mooseland!!

This is what the antlers did when my two were chewing on them. They became softer due to the saliva.

I thought the antlers sounded like a great idea, so I bought some for my dogs recently, but they weren't even interested in them.  Maybe my dogs are just wierd, though.  ;)

Sometimes things that other dogs like and I buy for mine, mine won't even touch them too. I just happened to luck out that they love the deer antlers. I read that to get your dog interested in them, you can put some peanut butter on it for taste, you can also put a light coating of plain yogurt or something on and freeze it I'm sure...

^ Ooh, that's a great idea.  That just might work.  Big Smile

Oh, I'm glad to read that most don't think teeth problems will be an issue.  I am going to keep an eye out in local stores before ordering online, I haven't seen any anywhere yet though.

Consider, too, that some dogs just have bad teeth. Teenie had a whole mouth full of them. She broke teeth on who knows what, even when I quit giving her much of anything to chew on. Her teeth were just super fragile.
