unintelligent dogs

    unintelligent dogs

I was wondering - does anyone have an unintelligent dog? The reason I ask is because whenever someone describes what they like about a certain dog/breed they pretty much ALWAYS say intelligent. So where are all the unintelligent dogs/breeds? You know, besides afghan hounds.

I don't think I have met any unintelligent dogs(unless your talking puppies,Most puppies have dumb puppy moments lol)All the dogs I have ever met had some spark in their eye,but then there are the ones who have had their spirit crushed by cruel owners.

I have 1 that is .... limited - the mini-poddle/maltese mix her brain is the size of a walnut (at best) she knows 3 or 4 commands despite years of attempts at training - add to that she is well house-broken (unless sick) and that is the extent of it - but she is loving, will place a paw on each side of your neck and push her head into your neck or side of your face in a hug - or careful, she will slip you the tongue in a kiss

We have a lab mix at the shelter that the behaviorist herself calls "stupid".  It's the one that bit me and several others.  He has no bite inhibition and even when you push him off and correct him, he just grins and charges again. There's a behaviorist, experience volunteers, and trainers all working with him and he's just taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r to catch on to even the simplest things.  We don't hate him or anything, but don't love dogs so much that we'd say this dog is intelligent! [:D]

i would say rosie has a pea brain-  she is fairly slow to learn commands, and seems to REALLY need guidance at all times.  about the only thing she excells at is retrieving, and only because it's very repetative.  i don't think i would try it with live game, though....

but that's ok. what she lacks in smarts she makes up for in looks![:D]

I'd call Pepito unintelligent. At 4 years old, he knows "Go to your crate" and "Dance." He has learned pretty much zero basic obedience because he can't remember things out of context- and "out of context" for him means giving hima  command in a different ROOM than I initially taught it to him in. From what vets have told us, he's basically um..."challenged" due to extreme inbreeding. He used to have terrible aggression issues on top of it all, but that's been helped considerably with herbal therapy.

I have 1 very intelligent Dachshund & then I have 1 "not so bright" Dachshund.  Shooter picks up commands very quickly (for a Dachshund) & poor Schatzi just sits there & looks confused.  She makes up for her "not so bright" moments by being the sweetest dog that I have.[:D]

I'm fairly certain that Mochi is stupid.

However, he is, as and always has been, the easiest of my three to deal with. It may take him forever to learn things, but he's very reliable. It never occurs to him that he doesn't *have* to listen. His mind seems to idle most of the time, rather than find trouble to get in to or ways to escape. This definitely isn't a "Huskies are stupid, you can't train them" thing. Sometimes if he was reluctant to sit or anything, I would reach over and pluck a leaf from a bush and cup it in my hand like a treat. Even thought he would watch me do that, he'd still get all excited and sit! Then he'd act all confused when I'd hand him the leaf!

He does dumb things over and over again, like getting stuck behind an open door. It never occurs to him to push it out of the way. Sometimes he gets trapped in the hallway and you can hear a frustrated, "UUUuuuurrht..." Somebody has to go save him. Also, he keeps trying to bring huge sticks in the house. They never fit through the door, he smacks the ends against the door frame

Oh, and it took 7 MONTHS to house break him. And I don't mean I was lazy and let him roam the whole house. I watched that dog like a hawk! I took him out every 15 minutes for weeks! He never gave any indication that he had to pee. No whining, no sniffing, no squatting, even! He's start to pee as he was running around!! It was like he didn't know he had to pee until he was peeing!

He's so so dopey and cute. He's everyone's favourite, and he's the one that always gets invited out.
My other two are smart. I think Kena is evil genius smart. It's scary. They're what huskies should be, and I think that is why they are less popular with my family.

Sheila is a German Shepherd and she is dumb. She has a really soft personality, and just doesn't get things. She seems to just forget things. She's a sweet dog, she just doesn't get it. She's blind in one eye, too, which doesn't help; she's always running into stuff because of it.

My Shar Pei was dumb as a brick. lol You could just tell that the lights were on, but nobody was home. [;)] He would stick his head through the bars on our patio and yelp each and every time he pulled his head back through. He NEVER figured out to just not stick his head through. That's just one example...

Bugsy's best friend is a golden same age (20 mos) and she is gorgeous, a love bug, but limited.  Her mom/owner calls her the dumb blond.  We've all tried to teach her to shake and she just looks at you desperate for the treat but for the life of her she doesn't know how to get it. Its in stark contrast to him who is scary smart (he's a mix) - you don't need to spend a lot of time with him to see his wheels spinning.  He is always 'on'

I go back and forth on Onyx. Sometimes I think she is super smart. Other times... well not so much. She picks up commands very quickly, but you have to be consistant. By consistant I mean don't stop for five minutes and expect her to retain anything. And her attention span is about as long as the word lasts. So I say Down, and she goes down. On the N she sits back up.[:@] But this is a dog that pins her Kong to the top of her crate so that the yogurt will drip out the bottom where she can get to it.[>:]

Crusher is smart most of the time. But he does have a hard time with the patio door. Open... or Closed... hmmm? Oh well just try it... Thunk. Damn Closed again.[:D]

Oh, the patio door! LOL! Mochi walked into a screen door once. Ever since then, he waits to be walked through by someone. He's afraid of trying it by himself now. I don't know if that makes him stupid, or smart...

i wonder why people say afghan hounds are dumb. is it that they mean their powers of rention are lacking? or because they are independant and prey driven like most sight hounds? i've also heard that Saluki's are kinda thick. people that actually HUNT with sight hounds, not lure coursin, say they wouldnt give you a wooden nickel for a dog that has a drop of saluki blood in it. then again they have their fans and supporters too that manage to successfully train and hunt them in the field.http://www.lurcher.fsnet.co.uk/page9.html

and speaking of afghans... i was watching Americas funniest videos last night and there was an afghan that learned to turn on the tap to get a drink of water. i say thats pretty clever lol
now... is smart being used in the context of easily trained and doing as its told or is it being used to mean all over intelligence and being aware of itself and its place in the world? i've seen both.... you can say dogs arent that smart all you want, but.... i dont believe it. not with some of my own experiences.
for me there is yard dog stupid... lawn ornimen, doesnt know a single command and couldnt care less to learn them either. this can be any or all breeds, all you have to do is ignore them and just feed them once a day. Ben is yard dog dumb.... being a kennel dog for most of his life, he hasnt got a clue and isnt very affectionate.
Cindi is a walking disaster area. SOMEONE owned this dog and spent some kind of money on her. her tail is docked quite nicely. maybe it was a home job, maybe not.... but she used to live with people at some point. she is a little clepto, and i am beginning to understand why she might have been "dropped off" [>:]
the King shepherd i had was a real lame brain too. he was good at commands, he was great on lead, came when called, but.... you just had to know this dog. climbing on cars, trying to break into the house, oh man.. i dont miss him.

Ooh ooh ooh! I know this one... It's because they breed them for aerodynamics. They want the least wind resistance, so they breed them to have tiny lil' skulls to slice through the air. These tiny lil skulls put pressure on their brains and squish them, making them stupid.

KIDDING! KIDDING! Someone said that to me once. The same applies to Collies, apparently. But the brain squishing makes them vicious too. [8|]
This person also told me that my puppy would turn on me one day, and that she could tell that kind of thing. Still waiting for that one...
