Brandy (ron2)

    Brandy (ron2)

Trying to keep up with Carla.Wink

This song always reminds me of my first step-father, Gerald French, Boiler Tech 2c aboard the USS Ogden, around 1974, going career to make Chief Petty Officer. It also reminds me of my friend, Lee, Norris Lee Blake, US Navy SEAL, 1964-69, Da Nang, Viet Nam.

This song was the only hit for Looking Glass in 1972. It's called "Brandy."

I thought I'd try this thread with a different title. And see if it goes zero for two. Or the song is before everyone's time, which is a good possibility.

Thank you. Whenever I hear it, I see memories of the naval bases at Port of Los Angeles and Port of San Diego, two places my first step-father was stationed after his active combat tour in the sea of Japan in support of Viet Nam. That song stayed a hit in California for quite some time after it was out of the national top 10. It combined the most popular sounds of the time. That is, when you hear that song, you are on the west coast in the 70's.

Tee hee  . . . . when my daughter was around 13 I took her and some friends to their "first" concert which was a Good Charlotte show - instead of lighters everyone whipped out their cell phones - I felt very old.

I love that song, Ron - well done!  I don't hear it much on the radio these days, but when I do, up goes the volume!

It makes me think of our friend, who served in the Marines with DH and went on to become a Navy Seal after he returned to college post-Marines.  He's still a Seal, not too far from retirement.  There was always a big party when he was in my hometown at his parents' house, and inevitably, we'd end up sitting around him listening to his stories of incredible training exercises or crazy things that happened to him.  The lyrics about feeling the ocean fall and rise as he told his sailor stories always reminds me of those times.  He'd have us riveted, and you could just hear the energy in his voice when he was talking.

    Great song!

Something else I forgot to mention was that Lee's rank was Petty Officer 2c. Before joining the Navy, he had been in the Belgian fleet. He was born in Oklahoma but was raised in Great Britain. He's told me some of the stuff he did while stationed in Da Nang. Some of it I can't talk about as it would be considered classified. OTOH, most of those missions included "plausible deniability." I have never known Lee to lie to me or anyone else, for that matter. So, I think of him with the line "he always told the truth. Lord, he was a honest man ..."

Can't play the video, but am I right in assuming it's the song that goes "Brandy is gone, I heard she's drifting out to sea..."?  I've always loved that song.  Wish I could hear you sing it, Ron!

Not sure about that one. Here's the lyrics for those that want to sing along. In fact, I play it parties and get-togethers because it is in a range that most anyone can handle and they always know the refrain.

"There's a port on a western bay and

It serves a hundred ships a day.

Lonely sailors pass the time away

    And talk about their homes.

There's a girl in this harbor town

And she works, laying whisky down.

They say, "Brandy, bring another round."

She serves them whisky and wine.

The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl. What a good wife you would be.

You've got eyes that could steal a sailor from the sea."

    Brandy wears a braided chain

Made of finest silver from the north of Spain

And a locket that bears the name of the

    Man that Brandy loves.

And so he came on a summer's day

    Bringing gifts from far away

But he made it clear he couldn't stay.

    No harbor was his home.

The sailor said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl. What a good wife you would be. But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea."

Brandy used to watch his eyes as he told his sailin' stories.

She could feel the ocean's foam rise, she saw it's ragin' glory.

He had always told the truth. Lord, he was an honest man.

And Brandy does her best to understand.

At night, when the bars close down,

Brandy walks through a silent town

And loves a man who's not around.

She can still hear him say.

She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl

What a good wife you would be.

But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea."

Repeat refrain on fade out in the original recording.

I just do the refrain 3 times and end on the major dominant.

Not the one I was thinking of, but I know that one, too!  I was young enough when it came out tho, that I never learned all the lyrics.
