Cat Scratch Question....

    Cat Scratch Question....

Sally seems to have tangled with a cat.  I was letting the dogs out when I got home this evening and let SAlly out first.  I hung back with Jack just long enough for him to get a drink and as i walked outside I heard scuffling and heard Sally yelp.  When she came to me she had blood all over the side of her face.  She seems to have a scratch on the ear, a small one on her nose, and scrapes behind her ear and on top of her head.  She has all her shots.  We looked for the cat but did not find it, although she does smell like cat pee and is getting a bath as I type.

Is there any special way we should clean it out/anything special we should put on it?

Peroxide should be good. Dont worry my dogs have had a gazillion cat scratches and nothing bad ever came of it....as long as ya clean it out but thankfully they heal quickly since they are typically very thin.

I wish my dogs would learn kitties=ouchies!

You'll want to scrub out the wound pretty well - since it was a stray cat - you don't know what it has come into contact with. Watch for swelling in the area.

Probably soap and water will do the trick.  Are any of the scatches really deep ?  I would watch for typical signs of infection, but I imagine just keep the area clean for a few days will be enough.

Is it normal for cats to pee when they are freaked out?  When I felt the blood on the side of Sally's head and pulled my hand away, my hand was covered in blood and stunk horribly of pee....

None of them look extremely deep.  I'm wondering if she was sticking her head under the shed when the cat nailed her and she got the scrapes behind her ear and on the top of her head by yanking her head out quickly when she was scratched.  Our cat's don't have claws in the front, so I don't think she even knew that kitties could be so pointy...

Yes...it could be anal glands your smelling too - both smell equally as bad.....

Sally's anal glands or the cat's?

most likely the cats - but they could be Sally's.... you'll probably never know that one!

A nice bath will get rid of that smell though.

Yes it is!  Maybe it's a way to scare their attacker off ??  But when a cat gets really frightened...they do pee.

I inadvertantly scared my Buster Boy one day.  He was laying on his back in the middle of the living room and I insanely had the urge to blow on his belly.  I gont on the floor and put my lips to his belly and scared the you-now-what out of him.  He got me across the right eye and forehead with his back foot.................  I looked terrible !  I stayed home from work that afternoon.  Healed right up though in a few days.  No hint of infection, I did use lots of Neosporin, and no scar.

After that, I made sure he knew I was coming to blow on his belly Smile

Ouch--on closer inspection after we got home from work last night it appears that the wound on Sally's ear goes all the way through to the other side--she must have got bitten, I can't imagine that being done with claws.  no wonder she yelped.

Poor Sally!  My Buddy can relate.  He has hunted, tangled with and killed many a critter in his life.  The most recent was a stray cat about a month ago.

This cat gave him a run for his money for sure...lost in the end.  But, gave him he!!.  Buddy came out of it with numerous bobo's all over his head.  I cleaned him up with soap and warm water and put neosporin on him twice a day for a few days.  Unfortunately, we weren't home when it happened.

Like has been said before, clean it up and keep an eye out for any redness or swelling.  It might not hurt to get a round of antibiotics, maybe, if you are worried about it.
