    To thin?

Someone posted this pic of thier dog on another forum and someone else said that that dog had "nice conditioning" I was thinking she looked pretty thin. Am I wrong?

Looks like a dog in working condition for that breed. If you check out Game Dog forums and APBT forums dogs that are shown with the *ADBA* registry usually look about like that. When they aren't being shown they look softer/heavier. I dont' have a problem with a dog in hard condition like this...the muscling is not something you would see with a truly emaciated dog and their usually working them hard so they feed high cal stuff and lots of it.

ETA: Lots better than some of the folks who brag about their dogs "thickness" and heft and show pics of a grossly overweight animal.

Oh NO!!!! That is a BEAUTY!!!

See the problem is that most of the general public think Pit Bull and imagine some fat, short nosed bully with stubby legs and a spiked  collar, LOL.

But the dog you pictured is a true APBT in top form! Unbfortunately they are far and few between because of the exploitation of this poor breed.

Basically a pit bull isnt supposed to weigh over 65lbs so if you see someone calling a 70lbs or more dog you tell them thats called a American Bully, its a mutt and frankly is what has given the APBT a bad name

No way. That dog looks great imo.

if that dog was a person he'd look like

Disclaimer: I realized my comment might start controversy so I'd just like to say I dont blame Dave Wilson or the american bully's TOTALLY for the bad rap of the APBT......but they sure didnt help.

For all of you who have NO clue as to what I'm talking about I just want to point out that most responsible American Pit Bull Owners do not recognize or embrace the over sized, low and stocky pit bulls most of you think of. A quick google of American Bully will clarify thigs for ya!

i do believe the creator of the american bully has crossbred other bulldog types into his lines - so i've been told - so in essence he could very well be a large factor in the blame game. and what research i've done many of the american bully kennels advertise personal protection dogs...... now..... what i dont get is why make a new breed when American Bulldogs are already better and more predictable than an American Bully?

anyway i dont wanna make a debate here Big Smile lovely dog!!

What a great comparison! That's so true. (the gladiator vs pit pictures above)

    • Gold Top Dog

lol yep i came to that conclusion one day and not even sure how.... but something like.. we know what a skinny person looks like.. all bony and no muscle tone... but we know what a beef cake looks like in comparison. dogs are much the same way! you know muscle when you see it!

or at least i do Big Smile

Dumfdog the other members are going to hate us for stealing this thread, LOL but you've got it right!

Dave Wilson, the creator of the American Bully's started in the early 80's and bred American Bulldog and Mastiff into the pitts to make a "bigger better pit bull". He only recently admitted to this and obviously didnt document it because the UKC wouldnt recognize them. Now 20-25 years later the over sized pit bulls bring the UKC more money then any other breed, has spun so out of control that they wouldnt even know where to start if they wanted to fix it and they really dont see how this hurts the breed and the image.

I mean seriously.......a 35-60lbs dog dosnt just naturally evolve into these monsters, LOL but thats what a lot of BYB are claiming, LOL.

Plus any idiot who advertises a pit bull as a protection dog really has no clue about the breed, LOL.

As you pointed before why are they making these when we have such good AB's and game APBT's? I've tried to point out to numerous BYB's that there dogs will be English Bulldogs in no time if they continue at this rate. They are already exhibiting the same health problems with their soft palletes and respiratory issues....UGH I could go on all day but I'll spare you all, LOL

    oh hells yes!

I agree, the dog looks great.  Now if it did NOT have all that muscle tone, then I would say too thin.  The muscle tone shows the dog is in good health and is getting good exercise/work.  Emaciated dogs lose their muscle tone.

i've said the same thing before. makes the fanciers angry when i say it too.. truth hurts i guess lol look them up on youtube. there was some kinda bully parade with these hippo dogs lumbering around in the summer sun wearing GIANT chains, collars and harnesses with their tongues hanging to their knees while some thug or gangsta is standing at the other end of the leash.... oi....

and yes sorry lol i dont mean to hijack the thread either but really its not. its a misconception people have in regards to the proper weight of a pit bull - or any dog for that matter - if the public is used to seeing what is in fashion then they're shocked and confused when they see the proper form!!
