I need any information you can give me...

on healing bones.   My horse back home had a spill on the ice 7 weeks ago and broke his elbow in 5 spots.  He had another round of x rays done today and he has "reasonable fusion" I was told.  So I was asked to get on the net and get any and all information that I could find about healing bones.

So if anyone has any experience dealing with broken bones in people or animals or anything I'll take the knowledge you have.

He's to stay splinted for another 6 weeks and they'll x ray again after that.  He's in good spirits and doing well otherwise Smile

Rest, rest, and more rest. I've never dealt with broken bones in horses - but I do know that they are difficult to heal. Take it slow. VERY slow.

With dogs, we keep them leashed while they have the cast, and for a few more months after the cast is removed.

well this guy is on 100% stall rest.   Meaning he is not to leave his stall at all.  It's a blessing that he's suh a great horse and you can just clean his stall around him.  He's quite content to not have to be out in the mud and he has hay tied up at his face.

He's splinted with  PVC pipe cut in half and molded to his leg.  He's quite the sight let me tell you! But not appearing to be in pain.  Even when off of his meds for a few days.

Acupuncture is awesome for helping healing take place and it works awesomely in horses.  http://www.tcvm.com is the Chi Institute and it has a locator on the left that will help you find someone near you.

So sorry for your horse!!! I thought mine broke his foot last fall. Fortunately we think he only tore a ligament, not sure as x-rays don't show soft tissue. He is just coming back from 6 months off.

I hope your guy has a speedy recovery!  Darn that ice!

    How old is your horse?

After I had my foot operated on for the third time - there was so much stress to the area that the bones were just not fusing together.  I was put on a contraption called a bone stimulator which sent small electrical stimuli to the area to encourage bone growth.  I have NO idea if this would work on a horse or not but you may want to ask your vet about it.
