    Bike riding with your dog

How do you train this? I have never done this with Ash and I don't know how I should start this. What makes me nervous is wondering Ash would see something and try to run after it? How do I tie her to me or the bike? I've never done this before so any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    thanks.

Do a google search with the word "Springer" and bike.  This is a shock absorbing attachment to the rear wheel.  I put mine on the right side, so Dess is between me and the curb.  It took about a week of short trips around a short block (started just going up and down the street in front of the house).  You need to work up slowly since the surface of the road can easily wear down pads to bloody tissue in a very short time.  It takes us about a week to two weeks to build up the pads for a 1-2 mile ride following winter lay off.

    ????  but be very careful!
About a month ago while driving, I passed a good friend of mine.  She was sitting on the curb beside her bike and dog, bleeding from a huge gash in her head.  I stopped for her, asked her what happened.  She said she didn't know and was very confused.  An ambulance was called, I took her dog and bike home with me for the night. She needed stitches above her eye and she had a concussion.  She's fine now, but still doesn't know what happened.  She guesses her dog either crossed in front of the bike or bolted away.  She no longer bikes with the dog.

I clicker trained accepting the bike, and I use a retractable lead. The dogs can't pull me over. If they bolt THAT hard, I can let go of the lead.

MRV- that thing looks great! I think I may just buy that.

I'll be careful. If it ends up being too hard or dangerous, or I just don't feel comfortable, then I won't bike with Ash. I'd like to try it though. If it worked out, I know she'd love it. And I love bike riding so hopefully it will work out.

I have the springer bike attachment too, and love it.  I have bad asthma so I "bike" with an electric scooter.  Before I got the springer, my dog crossed in front and I crashed rather than run him over.  As I was flying through the air I thought, "Gee, I really should be wearing a bike helmet...!".

Alright, I'm buying the attachment then. Thanks guys!

I'm not sure if you can do this in your area, but I bike ride on off-road trails, and Rupert is off-leash. It's much easier.
