Adding a second dog

Wow, it seems to be judgmental week on the board.  Sad

I understand about you not wanting to adopt from that shelter.  I chose to adopt from a no-kill shelter because I wanted my money supporting that kind of organization.  It is a personal choice, and I agree with jenn that the pups are going to be born anyway, so why not take one into a loving home so they don't end up in a terrible shelter.  To each his own.  It's not like you're buying a puppy mill dog, for goodness' sake!

Good luck with your new pup when you get it.

Ah! I was expecting something like this so it doesn't bother me. And it makes me feel better that there are people out there that care so much Smile

I understand and support the request that a shelter dog is a more ideal option but if she cant do anything about the breeding and its free what would be the diff? The chance of these mixed dogs ending up in the shelter is as great as any other dog....should the OP wait to see if any go to the shelter and then pay shelter costs when she could get one for free and raise it as a pup? LOL

I have to agree here with AuroraLove, I really don't see what the big deal is if the OP takes a puppy for free it adopts one from the shelter. It's not like she's going out and supporting a puppymill. geeeeez!

*sigh* I'm just going to make another thread regarding this kind of thing......I'm really interested to see forum member's views on it and I don't want to steal any more of oranges81's thread. Oranges81 I know you'll have a great home for whichever dog you decide to welcome in. Good luck with it.

"It's like if someone is steadfast against animal testing and decides to, let's say, boycott Pantene products because they test on animals (not sure if they do, but probably). If you see one of their products on a shelf, are you going to say, "I can buy that because it's already been manufactured, it's not like I'm encouraging animal testing." I don't think so. If consumers buy "products", whether they be hair care or puppies, the cycle will continue."

I hear ya BUT if they were handing out free samples that would be a differnt story, no?

No, I don't think so. Not if you stand by your principles.

Irish Setter Girl I hear ya.

I refuse to budge on a lot of pit bull issues like BSL and things like that BUT we do have to give credit where credit is due.....I am thankful OP knows the difference between a puppy mill, I am thankful she knows better then to pay for this pup. It might not be ideal in some people's eyes but it is a healthy alternative to not knowing where these pups might end up.

*G* If I didn't know where these pups are coming from, I wouldn't even consider getting one. I refuse to budge on certain subjects as well.

First as there are no puppies yet at this point and the bitch isn`t yet bred I would discourage the people to even breed her to start with.

Now I have never had any problems bring in a new dog or pup into our house with another dog here already. I`ve done both and they were all females fixed and not fixed yet and had no problems. Maybe I just have been lucky. I think if you want it to work you can do it.

And as I've stated..Nothing I say to them will change their minds...

Now does the sex of the puppy matter when I've already got a female? Like would it be better if it was a male?

    • Gold Top Dog

How does she act when she meets dogs for the first time? Do you see a difference when it's a male or female?

All my dogs are females. That's all I will ever have. Now Cheyanne gets along with all my dogs but I noticed with strange dogs she will tolerate a male much faster than a female. Then again when she was a puppy she did grow up with my grandmother's male keeshound mix.

So considering you have Wolf too I would probably go for a male if Maze does good with Wolf. She's already used to being around a male she might accept it better.

I do believe you I just thought maybe.

I have been told if you have a female and get another one the next dog you should get is a male. It was told this on this forum too. I see nothing wrong if you want a female and I say go for it. I always have. I don`t want a male and I have never had a problem having more than one female fixed or not. Good luck if you do get a pup. I know you will give it a very good home.

Maze usually gets along better with males then females..I've always had females aswell.. I was thinking a change this time.

Most of her friends are male as well..

I think with a female I'd have to deal with a heat (if by chance I didn't get her spayed in time) with an intact male..

    • Gold Top Dog

Now like Mollymoo said if you like a female instead of a male then get it. Maze would adjust to having a pup that's a female around than an older female dog.

Like I said I only have females. Of course I always bring puppies in when I get new furbabies so Cheyanne dont really pay attention. She's used to puppies being brought in. I would have to do things a little different though if I was to bring an older female dog in.
