Moving to New York, need some help.

Hello, I'm a bit new here, you can see some pics and more info on the intro thread.

I came here looking for some help or maybe to make some contacts. I am moving to NYC in August to start grad school, and will be taking my dog with me. I know New York is a dog-friendly city, but I need to find an apartment. My dog is 50lbs, which is medium-sized, but I think some may consider it big. I'm going to Columbia, so I'm hoping to stay near there, or at least on the island. I know rents can get expensive pretty fast, but I will be a student (luckily it's a one-year program), and want to at least find someplace that's safe. There are a lot of places out there, I am hoping to find somebody with some info. I would really appreciate it.

Congrats on your accomplishment! Colombia is a fantastic institution :) I know it's pretty difficult to find housing in general in new york. Does colombia have subsidized housing for you guys? that may be the most cost effective and I know they usually allow pets (at least the ones I've looked at do) I know cornell does, so I would imagine colombia does as well.

I don’t have any specific information for you but I will say that I am jealous you will be living in NYC and also want to share how impressed I am with that city in terms of pet ownership.  I am shocked the number of dogs there and how you never see a pile of dog crap not picked up and the dogs don’t seem so well adjusted and there seems to be a lot of very GOOD dog owners there.

What an exciting time in your life.  I wish you luck with your search, move and schooling.  There are a couple members here that are from New York or at least have lived there and hopefully they will be along to help you with your questions.
