Where to find a used car?

Where to find a used car?

I have to buy a new car.  I'm using one of my dad's now, but he wants to sell it and wants WAY too much for it.  Anyone know of a good place to look for cheap used cars? Websites or anything?

I sold mine on Craigslist. Have you checked there?

This is how I have located the last 3 used cars I have purchased and they have all been exactly what I was looking for and met all of my specifications.  Be sure to pay for the 1 month carfax subscription when you start getting really serious to find out about any pre existing major issues.

Check with your friends, neighbors and coworkers.  In my neck of the woods, someone is ALWAYS selling a car!  Heck, if you had been here last week, you could have bought my last car for a song.  My elderly neighbor scooped her up and now my retired baby will be babied by a granny!

When you do decide on a car, it is soooo worth the money for a pre-purchase inspection. You will find out what needs to be done and what is OK.  This can be a good bargaining tool for a better price (IF something needs to be done). It also will alert you that this may be a repair bill waiting to happen, has been in a major accident, etc.

We usually buy our used cars from new car dealerships.  You can usually get one that is pre-certified which means they come with some type of warranty.  If you need to finance it, you can usually get a pretty decent rate through the manufacturer, or if you want to buy a warranty you can get it through them too.

However, if you are just looking for a cheaper - get by car, the local paper would be good.  My dad used to buy a car in May for when my sister came home from college and then turn around and sell in it August for the same price.  This was a while back, but he would get decent, no nonsense cars for around $1500!

we almost always buy thru Carmax to have the security of dealing with known folks, we've always been very happy with them. We're looking for a car for me right now (yes Gina may finally have to learn to drive!)...and that's where we'd like to get it. There or a certified used car off a dealership lot.

Another vote for Carmax - I've never actually bought from them, but they did do an appraisal on my last car and they were very thorough. The whole experience felt very very well designed and well regulated. If I were looking for a used car, I would definitely start there.
