Schooling question (yes it's dog related [:P])

I'm looking to going to school to become a vet assistant. I originally  considered become a vet tech but I don't think I'd be able to handle it..

    SO! Next best thing! Lol.

Basically what I'm wondering is how challenging are the classes? What's involved in the teaching process?

I looked up the website of the school I'm considering but it really didn't tell me much and I wanted your guys opinion on what is REALLY involved in being an Assistant.

    Thanks!

Edit: This is the school I'm looking at. I really want to go but I have a bad habit of second guessing whither I can do it or not..

Out of curiosity... why don't you think you would be able to handle being a tech?

assistants and techs do a lot of the same things.

Don't the techs help during surgeries?

Last I heard assistants don't help with major surgeries.
I'm sure if I actually tried I probably could be a tech but something tells me that I won't be able to do it.

some techs yes - and I was reading on the site you posted that assistants need to have a basic knowledge of simple surgeries. Honestly, I don't know the difference between techs and assistants. I've always seen them working together on stuff.

I work as a tech, and I love watching the surgeries.

I don't have a problem doing simple surgeries.. It's the major ones I'm worried about. Tongue Tied

What are your responsibilities as a tech?

I'd personally go for the tech. Honestly, surgery sounds gross and horrible, but in reality it's amazing and very few people can't handle it or don't like being involved. It's different with a patient draped and when you are concentrating. Give it a try, you may suprise yourself. Don't let your mind or your fears defeat you, it you give it a whirl and it's really not for you then fine, but seriously I can tell you from experience, most people think it is amazing ;)

Eeesh, surgery wasn't for me. In high school I job shadowed a human surgery tech, since I thot I wanted to be one. Good thing I job shadowed! LOL. It's just not for me.

BUT with that said, maybe call around and see if a vet tech would let you job shadow? Then you could 'get your feet wet' and see if you liked it.

The job program I'm in is allowing me to job shadow for two weeks but I have to some research first. I've always wanted to do something in a vet's office except be the actual vet.. Lol. I'd just like some personal experiences and thoughts on the job itself.  Smile

My fears and mind always hold me back.. I'm very hard on myself but atleast I can openly admit it! Lol..

I wasn't very good at biology in HS so I guess that's adding to my fears right now.. *sigh*.. I'll continue researching thou. I've got until the end of April to make up my mind of which one I want to try for..

I don't work in an actual vet clinic.... so my duties are a bit different than a regular place.

but... basically - I draw blood, run the blood work (we have an in-house blood machine, really cool stuff!), fecal samples, urine samples, skin scrapes, medicating animals, assisting with surgeries - watching the heart monitor, bagging, etc. I also do dental surgeries and humane euthanasia. There's a lot more.... I just can't think of it all right now!

You work in a shelter right Erica?

That doesn't seem TOO bad.. I can do that stuff.. I think.. Lol..

    • Gold Top Dog

    Yep - I do.

I keep forgetting he's such a little guy because of his big ears! lol..
Maze's paws look like someone dumped white paint down her front and it dripped on her paws.. Lol...

I am looking in to the vet tech more now that I know an assistant and tech do virtually the same stuff. Smile
