My poor baby kitty.. Updated (Chelsea)

My Kovie baby has some sort of eye infection. He's got feline herpes, and a scarred, cloudy eye because of it. He's had that since I got him at 9 weeks (he's just about 6 years old now). In 2006 he had a blocked tear duct because of it, and got this swelling below his eye. My sister was a vet tech at the time, and said it wasn't really a big deal. One day her vet was really slow, so I ran him up there and they drained the pocket of tears. They said it would probably happen again if he didn't have some surgery, but if it did, it could just be drained again, and it wasn't a huge deal.

Last week I noticed it happening again, but it was much smaller, and swelled much more slowly than last time, so thinking it wasn't a big deal, I put off taking him to the vet. in my defense, I've had a lot going on the past week or two. Yesterday he came up to me, and his eye was like half shut from swelling, and there was pus all around his eyelids. His cornea also appears to be even more scarred now, so I can only guess he had some nasty little herpes outbreak, and that's what caused this. He's clearly in pain too, he won't willingly let me touch him, and he runs away when I even talk to him. Needless to say he's got a vet appointment, today at 4. I'm kind of freaking out, and feeling REALLY guilty for not taking him when I first noticed the blocked tear duct thing. I'm probably just being dramatic, but I'm a little worried he's going to lose his eye or something from this.

The worst part is I'm supposed to go to Maryland for almost a week tomorrow morning. Hopefully it's just a little infection and he just needs antibiotics, which my Mom can give him, but if it's something more serious..I guess I'm canceling my trip that my sister and brother-in-law used their airline credit for so I could go with them. Which means I won't see my cousin (who's really more like a sibling) before he moves to Germany. *sigh*

Kovu could use some good "nothing serious, get better fast, sorry your owner's a moron" vibes...

Poor Kovu - I hope the appt goes well and they can get the eye cleared up quickly. I know that when I had a cat, I didn't always notice health problems with her as soon as I did with my dogs. I guess it's because she didn't interact constantly with me, so sometimes it took awhile to notice a problem. Don't be too hard on yourself Big Smile

I hope things go well and Kovu gets better ASAP! And I hope you have a great time in MD :)

Stop kicking yourself.  You are NOT a moron.  I'm sending Kovu some good vibes & some chin skritches when he feels like letting you touch him again.

    Have a GREAT trip!

Just checking in to see how Kovu is and what the vet said.

What an ordeal today was, lol. His appointment was at four. The vet is..three minutes from my house. I wanted to get there a few minutes early. So 3:45, I was ready to go, I just had to grab Kov and leave. So I put some canned food out to lure him into the bathroom, I grab a crate, put a towel in it, and head into the bathroom. I pick him up, and tried to put him in headfirst. No go. Not shocking, but Kovu's such a docile guy I thought it was possible. So I pull the towel out and stand the crate up on its end, try to put Kov in butt-first. I got scratched for that one. At this point I'm realizing Kovu needs a bigger crate, but our appointment's in 10 mins and I don't have one. Sooo I try to shove him in head-first. Nah-ah. I tried every which way I could think of, even taking the crate apart, and I seriously could NOT get the cat into it! Now it's 4 o'clock, so I run grab a cardboard box, thinking however I can get the darn cat there is good enough. Oh no. This cat, even with me holding the lid on TIGHT, still managed to shove his way out of the box (ripped it!). Now I'm scratched up, bleeding, sweating, COVERED in his fur, and STILL don't have the cat contained!! Omg.. So I run find a too-small, PINK cat harness, throw that on him, jump in the car, and call the vet's to tell them I'm still coming, and ask if I can bring a cat in on a leash.. lol...

Got there at 4:15. They have the appointment set for Cherokee (wtf?? I clearly said "My cat" and "Kovu" a million and a half times while setting the appt.. I even specifically said he hadn't been there before..helloooo), so I had to fill out a new patient form. Then I got to sit in the waiting area for 15 minutes, with big dogs very interested in my uncrated cat... But Kovu was reeeally good.

4:45 vet finally comes in.. apparently she had a dog patient with a pretty bad vaccine reaction. I should mention though that I was supposed to pick up my Mom at 5, 10-15 minutes from the vet's office. I didn't have a big problem with waiting obviously, but it still sucked. Onto what she said...

Vet says..she doesn't think he has herpes, though she's not positive..she thinks it might be chlamydia... Then she listened to his chest and said it didn't sound great, so she wanted to do chest x-rays, which I let her... They come back, and I get to sit with them up on the computer for 15 minutes, panicking about what I'm seeing, because I had NO clue what I was seeing, lol... Then she came in and told me pretty much everything looks good, but he appears to have bronchitis, or bronchial problems, or I don't remember what.. But it's apparently related to chlamydia? Anywho.. She pulled blood for bloodwork, just to check it out, make sure his CBC is normal and everything, and to rule out heartworms, because he has an occasional cough. She gave me a prescription for Zithromax (antibiotic), a tube of eye ointment, and a jar of powdered lysine in case it actually is herpes...

So..it was then 5:45..I pay..and we go on our merry way. Picked up my Mom an hour late (I texted her and told her I'd be late, but it still sucked). We get home, and Kovu, who of coured was not in a crate, has wedged himself under my seat, and would not come out.. He wasn't stuck, which was my first thought.. He came out for a sec, and when I went to grab him, he wedged himself back under. So he hung out in the car for half an hour, cause I just couldn't get him out... I think he was freaked out because the neighbor's gardeners were around, so there were lawnmowers and weedwhackers and stuff going all loud...

So thennn I look up Target's pharmacy hours to fill his Zithromax script, and website says it closes at 10. So I get there at 9:10 (I had all kinds of other stuff to do, and figured if they closed at 10, I'd take advantage of that), and oh, no, website lied, they closed at 9... So I had to call my Mom and get her to find me an open pharmacy. Rite Aid's open til 11. After I drop off the prescription there, their computers went down, so they could only accept cash..well I was using a friggin credit card.. so I have to go to the ATM for cash. I get back to Rite Aid, and oh, there computers are back up... But they gave me a $10 discount, so whatever...

So... Kovu needs ointment put in his eye 3x/day, antibiotics poured down his throat 2x/day, and lysine mixed into canned food 2x/day. And I have a trip planned for tomorrow morning. *sigh* My Mom says she doesn't have a problem doing it, but I feel reeeeeaally bad, and almost canceled my trip... I still feel like I maybe should, but I guess I'm not. He's also supposed to have a recheck appt in 3-4 days, but the vet said I could push it back to next week if I need to, so I guess I'm doing that.

Oh. My. Goodness. What an eventful day it was... Now I get to pack, shower, bathe Cherokee, set up my new TiVo, clean up a little since my house is TRASHED, put ointment in Kov's eye, give him antibiotics and lysine, and then fly all day tomorrow. Crying But he's not deathly ill, and it doesn't look like he's losing his eye, soooo..here's to hoping the antibiotics work well, and being grateful that it's nothing terribly serious.

    Thanks for caring guys.

Wow.. And I thought stuffing Kameo into a crate was hard! Lol..

That's one thing I like about my vet. I can bring Crombie in on a leash if need be (since I don't own a cat crate) Lol!!

Good to hear it was too serious!!

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh my that was an ordeal and a half.  Glad it seems like  he'll be ok.  Give your Mom an extra hug for giving him meds for you and enjoy your trip!

Oh my goodness, what a pain!!!! Cats can sure be fun, can't they? Stick out tongue  Last time we had to take one of BF's family's cats somewhere in a crate it took 3 of us, 2 towels, 2 crates, and we still got scratched.

Glad it's nothing too serious with his eye. But it sounds like you two need to have "the talk" - herpes? chlamydia? doesn't he use protection!?! Stick out tongue

I had a little kitten once that had feline herpes. The vet gave me a cream to put on his eyes. It cleared up fast. So hopefully the vet gives you the same antibiotic cream mine gave me and his eyes get better.

I too am glad that it seems to be something that can be taken care of.  I was thinking the exact same thing.  Boy, Kovu sure must have gotten around in his youth. ~L~  Have a fun trip.  Don't worry about Kovu.  I'm sure he's in great hands with your mom  Definitely give your mom some extra hugs for taking care of him for ya.

    • Gold Top Dog

Forget the hugs - bring her back crabs! It fits with the theme, is regionally appropriate, AND delicious! :-D

Hope your trip is lovely - let us know how it goes!

Other than that, the day was alright, huh?
