i just do the same thing as with teaching down/stay. you say "down" right? and then say "stay" right after? well..... the dog already knows "stay".. so what i do is say "Up" .. pat my leg as if telling her to come, that gets her up off the ground and ready to move forward.. then i say "stay" and she stops in her tracks. to start with Kaydee was already pretrained with down/stay, sit/stay, but didnt know the part about stand/stay.. it didnt take her long to figure it out. so now all i have to do is say "Up" ... or "On your feet". once in a while she'll move her front foot as if she is going to come to me - sometimes she tries to guess what i'm going to say next - and in such situations i just tell her to stay put, or say "no"
i hope that helps some..... like i said, it was easy for me because someone else did half the work with her in the down/sit/stay department.
