POLL: Do you smoke cigarettes?

I started smoking with I was about 12. Nothing serious, but I did it for fun. By the time I was 17, it was serious. I smoked most of my adult life and just quit in 2001.

So NO. I don't smoke. Smile

Hehe I'm the first vote! :)  I don't smoke, never have, and never will - almost everyone at work smokes so I will take breaks with them on nice days, but cigs just have no appeal (health effects and smell primarily).

Me either. I have never even tried....I think mainly because nobody in my family smoked, so when I was younger I was always scared if I ever tried it they would smell it on me and I'd be in deep you-know-what. Now that I'm older and have no desire to pick it up I'm glad because all of the negative effects on health and man cigarrettes are getting expensive!

No, and never will.  Beyond just not appealing to me, I have a heart condition that means NO smoking.

My dad smokes heavily, between 2-3 packs a day.  He has terrible problems breathing sometimes, and is very congested when he wakes up.  Listening to him cough and hack in the mornings was always good incentive not to pick it up.

I started smoking at about 12 and gave it up at about 20. I never really smoked much so it wasn't hard to quit.

I have never smoked a full cigarette but did try one as a teenager. I am the ONLY member of my family who never actually started smoking. Both my parents are dead, one as a direct result of smoking the other a related result.  Growing up I never cared about cigarette smoke, but now I can not stand it! I won't let anyone smoke in my home or car. I am glad more and more places are going smoke free (sorry smokers).

The other thing I am amazed at is the price of cigarettes. My mother used to send me to the store with a $20 bill to get a carton of cigs for her and my dad. Now that buys a pack or two, ok that is an exaggeration but my mother used to complain my horses were expensive! At least they are good for your health.

When I was a rebel teenager, I tried it.  My lungs hurt so bad, I couldn't smoke even if I wanted to.  My DH smoked for ~35 years.  This last October he finally made the decision to quit...after many years of contemplating.  He decided to go see a hyptotherapist.  It worked like a charm for him.  He still gets cravings and probably always will.  But, I can't tell you how nice it is that he doesn't smoke any longer.  And, I am so proud!

    Yup - I smoked.

I started at around 12 and hit the peak in my mid twenties.  In the last few years I cut back to about a pack a week, then a pack every two weeks and then, one day, I forgot to go have one.

I can't say that I don't ever have one now, but I can't remember the last one I smoked.  Still crave it some days though.  I've tried to replace those cravings with walks and jaunts with M&M instead.

I smoked through highschool and on and off through college. Smoked a ton when I hit 21 all the way through about 23 years old when I was going out to the clubs and bars alot. Quit for awhile, but smoke occassionally when I am stressed out. Promised myself I am done for good because I want to run races soon and eventually run half and full marathons so I have to be done with them.

I'm 19, so there's a lot of life ahead of me, and a lot of things I won't say I'll "never" do, but this is one thing I can definitely say NEVER to. I've just never understood why someone over the age of maybe..13..would START smoking. Once you start, okay, it's hard to quit...but why start?? It's just..ridiculous.

I took my one and only drag of a cigarette when I was probably 6 or 7. I remember it clearly, and I remember why I did it. My Mom wasn't home, she was out with her boyfriend (which was the story of my life for just a couple years there), and one of my sisters (15 or 16 at the time, and a smoker herself) was being really grumpy and bossy to me, and..there was this lit cigarette laying on the table. So I picked it up, and she started laughing at me, saying she dared me. So I did. And she SCREAMED at me and said she was going to call Mom (I don't think she did, because Mom probably would have been madder about Sarah calling her than about me smoking at that point), as I about fell on the floor from the burning in my lungs and throat... Ohhh good times...

Never smoked, have no intentions of starting. Everyone at work smokes, so I do take breaks with them - but that doesn't make me want to start!

My dad smoked when I was younger, but he quit shortly before my brother was born.

Hah leave it up to two people working at a shelter to say the same thing about taking breaks with the smokers!  Why do people in this field smoke so much?  Out of the 40 people at work I think only about 5 or 8 don't smoke and a few of those non-smokers are just doing it because they are pregnant.  Is smoking that good of a stress reliever?!

    • Gold Top Dog

Never have, never will.  I'm up to my eyeballs everyday with people who ruin their bodies and die horrible deaths due to medical problems caused or exacerbated by smoking (cancer, emphysema, coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, wound healing complications, etc.)

I don't anymore. Used to in highschool but only when I had a stressful test to deal with. Both my parents smoke and my BF smokes.. As well as I live in a house full of smokers. *sigh* But Bf is cutting back once he realized he was giving Maze a smokers cough, and a pretty bad one at that.. One day he'll quit. Probably when I finally get pregnant but until then he's willing to smoke outside or with a door open so I don't have to deal with it as bad.. Thou it doesn't really bother me..

I smoked for 26 years and quit cold turkey....
No one believed that I could do it....I smoked a lot....

It's been at least 5 years since I quit....I don't even remember anymore?
