    Keeping teeth clean?

What types of bones or food will help keep his teeth clean aside from brushing his teeth?
    • Gold Top Dog
    raw bones are good

I  use raw bones, I've never had to brush Matties teeth, even the vet is impressed with them.

I have a Shih Tzu what kind of raw bones are small enough for him to chew?  I read somewhere that carrots were good for them, too?

chicken wings, short ribs. I don't know about the carrots I 've read that too my dogs eat them a lot they love them but I never noticed an inprovement from them.
I cant' give them RMB's anymore, they just get the runs each and everytime, it drives me crazy they just have such a problem w/ them and I know they work I can see a difference in one or two bones.

Have you tried taking most of the meat off them to start with ?
    • Gold Top Dog
yes but his mouth can barely fit a ping pong ball.  I have heard chicken bones are bad for dogs but would they be for a small dog like him?
    • Gold Top Dog
What are RMB's?  I did buy him a dentabone and it seems to do some cleaning.  I was wondering if there was anything else out there?

A raw bone is a meat bone with maybe a little meat lft on it and marrow on the inside, not cooked, and usually frozen, unless you get them fresh from a butcher.   I have read that raw carrots are not digestible by dogs, that they need to be cooked to serve any purpose nutritionally.

  • Veggies: preferably pureed raw or can be steamed (whole raw veggies, such as broccoli or carrot sticks, are not harmful but can't be digested by dogs). Good veggies include carrots, celery, all kinds of greens (kale, collard greens, mustard greens, bok choy, cabbage, spinach, chard, parsley, cilantro, etc.), lettuce (anything but iceberg, which is not very nutritious), broccoli, brussel sprouts, zucchini, asparagus, turnips, parsnips, etc. Do NOT feed [linkhttp://www.jlhweb.net/BOSS/onions.html]onions[/link]. Warning: If your animal is having any symptoms of arthritis, inflammation, respiratory problems or any other conditions that involve swelling or mucous, stay away from the nightshade family (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant).

Dentabones are NOT healthy and are detrimental to his teeth, in the long run.

Give him a chicken wing. He'll be fine. COOKED bones of any kind are unsafe. RAW bones of any kind are fine.

I give Lana (Tzu/Bichon X) beef rib bones and marrow.  Sometimes she gets pork ribs.

I give my two darlings Flossies, they are dried beef tendon dried into a spiral shape.  They were at the vet this week and he complimented me on the clean, white teeth.  Only problem I have is that, with the new guy in the house, we are having some aggression problems surrounding their use.  But, if I have the little darling on my lap with her flossie and the new guy in town on hubby's lap with his flossie, the kingdom can be peaceful.  I know I should be able to have the two of them side by side chewing happily away without aggression, but for now with the new guy here only 5 weeks and this being the first chew thing he's ever had in his 6 years, I'm doing the best I can!!

My 10 lb. dog does fine with the RMB and chicken legs.  You can find the RMB in the grocery store meat dept. called soup bones.  I got a pack of 6 today for $1.10.  I get the small ones, about  1-2 inches thick but sometimes I see bigger ones.  I give it to Zoe about once a week.

Her teeth are white except where she had tartar before I got her (on the top of her pointy teeth... maybe incisors).  Any ideas how to clean that area?  Tooth brushing doesn't remove that.

Chicken legs are RMB. Soup bones are recreational bones:)

The top of the tooth has to be scaled, I think. I'm not sure, though. I had to have Teenie's cleaned after I got her. Dachshunds seem prone to dental issues....

why would meaty bones clean better than non meaty bones?
