Dogs that do *not* shed?

Border collies- even the smooths- shed a lot.

For comparison purposes, I get enough hair off Malcolm to make an extra Indy every week or so.

(Indy is a corgi, Malcolm is a 60 pound smooth collie)

A dog that doesn't shed?  At all, not one bit?

Any dog with fur is going to shed some.  Comes with the territory.  Even people shed a little.  You can minimize shedding some with breed choice, quality food, and regular brushing, but a completely non-shedding dog is just not a realistic requirement.

What about a Portuguese Water Dog? They have a coat similar to a poodles, curly and needs to be trimmed but low shedding. They are active smart dogs who do quite well in agility.

Terriers DO shed!  I have seen a million places that they do not, but that is completely untrue.  If they didn't then why do I have little white hairs everywhere?  They do shed a little less than a lot of other double coated breeds because of the hair type, but still, they are NOT HYPOALLERGENIC!  This is coming from a terrier owner, not a website like wikipedia.

Personally, I would stay away from the Border Collie, not just for allergie purposes, but they're a LOT of dog.  These dogs must have jobs, no matter what.  They do extremely well in agility, but just training for agility isn't enough exercise for them.
Decide how much exercise you're willing to do now and start getting yourself on a schedule to be prepared.

Oooh, the Jack Russell is one I forgot to add as one of the terriers that DOES shed. The Bull Terrier is also a shedder. Most of the terriers though, like the Welsh Terrier, Airedale, Schnauzer, Scottie, Irish Terrier, Westie, Kerry Blue, etc. don't shed.

Btw, I think the original poster understands that all dogs shed a little. She did say that they've had a Schnauzer and obviously didn't have problems with the shedding.

I think Schnauzers are a great choice for people with sensitivities to dogs, they have no real "doggie" smell, they come in several sizes so if you don't like toy then you can get the giant, and they hardly shed at all. The downside is they have to be trimmed regularly, but honestly, any dog that doesn't shed is going to need to be trimmed regularly.

I think the giant Schnauzers are gorgeous personally, they look so elegant. :)

What about a papillion?  The ones that I've been around don't shed much at all, and they do well in agility.

I can attest to the fact papillons DO shed.  They just don't shed as much as many longhaired dogs do.  They have no undercoat.  Online Isee a lot of places that say they don't shed, but I can assure you they do.

One of the best dog breeds for allergies that I've hard of is bichons.

The problem is that many shorter haired dogs SHED.  More so than longer haired dogs.  GSDs and labs shed more than any other dog I can think of.

I dunno, my shelties could probably prove that wrong LOL.  [;)]

And I've had a GSD, lab, and shelties too.  Shelties and collies, I swear once you have them any other breed shedding is nothing.  LOL

Shih Tzu's don't really shed at all,  you have to brush them alot or keep them clipped.  They are sweeet, lovable, companions that love to play.  Harley my Shih Tzu has finished beginner obedience and will be taking graduate beginner and agility this year. They can do very well obedience as well as agility if given the time to teach them.  I have found that Harley is very smart little dog.
I had a Rottie and he would shed and shed and shed it was awful.  I had to sweep the kitchen 3x a day.

Whoever said that...Thank You!!!! I 100% completely understand that all dogs shed some. But yes, we've had a Mini Schnauzer for 14 years and never had a problem.
