Well, I almost did it....

    Well, I almost did it....

So I had to go to the Navy base to get new decals for one of our cars today. As I was walking out of the Pass and ID office, this man walked by with one of the tiniest chihuahas I've ever seen. She came right over to me, and I bent down to pet her. The first thing I said to the man was "Oh my God...she's so skinny..." And she was. She was so malnourished and thin, that she was missing patches of hair, and I could see every bone in her little body...even the vertebrae in her tail. It made me so sad. Her nails desperately needed to be clipped. It was obvious that she was not taken care of at all.

The man proceeded to tell me that he does feed her (what, once a week?!), but that he just doesn't have the time for her anymore, so he's been looking for a good home for her. He works two jobs, yada yada yada...every excuse iin the book to justify the condition of this poor little dog. She, at this point, had climbed into my arms, and successfully melted my heart. I asked if he was seriously looking to find her a good hime, and he said yes, but that he wanted to sell her...he paid $650 for her (why someone would pay so much for a dog only to neglect it is beyond me...), and would sell her for $450. I told him that he would probably be hard pressed to find anyone willing to pay so much for a dog in such poor shape. He, of course, seemed shocked at my response.

Guys, I was willing to write this man a check for $100 for this dog, just to save the poor little thing...but for some reason, I didn't. I knew my husband would kill me if I brought home another dog. Let alone paid $100 for this ;pitiful looking little thing. I doubt the man would've taken $100 for her anyway. He seemed to think he could get a lot more. So I told him that I wasn't in a position to pay so much for her, but that I would love to take her and care for her and love her. He said "Well, if you change your mind, please call me. She needs to go to someone like you." he wrote his number down on a torn piece of paper he had in his pocket, and continued on his way. It has taken every ounce of self control in me to not call him back and tell him that I'm coming to pick up this dog.

I know DH doesn't want another dog, and he's usually not a small-breed person, but I cannot stop thinking about this poor little dog. WHAT SHOULD I DO?!!?! My heart and head are at complete odds with each other right now...

GOSH, can you sell her to a caring person after you fatten her up? SO sad....

I would offer the guy $100 and then turn her over to a Chi rescue. If he has papers for her, I'm sure a recue would be able to fatten her up and place her pretty easily.

    It would be good Karma

I know...I think I'm going to call the guy tonight. I can't stop thinknig about this little dog. I know I can't save them all, but it's hard to turn one away when it's right there, waiting to be saved...know what I mean? [:(]

Keep your fingers crossed that he will take my offer of $100 for her.

That would be wonderful if you get get that poor little dog from him. I'll be praying that he accepts your $100 offer.
    • Gold Top Dog
Gosh, I hope he takes it.

Remember, TINY meals. Like a teaspoon full of food, five times a day. Too much, too fast will make her sick. Poor little thing!

Thanks, Guys. I will be calling after dinner sometime. And I still haven't talked to the hubby about it either. I don't want to get him all worked up out in the middle of nowhere (he's on deployment right now) until I know for sure that the guy will even accept my offer. Hopefully, everything will come together.

But I can't stop wondering...what if the guy says no? How high should I go?

Maybe you could word it like  you can't stop thinking about her and you know how much he loves his dog so you were hoping you could give her a good home but all you can afford to pay at this time is $100.00.
    Good Luck.

You could try offering $50 and working up to $100.  However, you need to consider that this may be a very ill dog and you could be looking at $$$$ in vet bills.  Find a spot in rescue before you offer money for the dog.

Then he is either nuts or a con man!  Do not go to his ;place alone.

You have his information, can't you report him to AC.  Trying to sell a very sick dog would get their attention I hope.
