    Horses taken away

About a year ago..maybe even two now....I wrote here about the farm that is behind me here in Ohio.   They have a few horses...it was winter with a lot of snow. I took digital pictures and I think I put a couple on this thread to say that the poor horses were covered with snow..out in the cold for a couple of days and everyone here explained to me that the horses were fine...they have a three sided barn ( can't remember the name that you guys called it---don't feel like SEARCHING for that thread ) and that the horses could go in if they so disired and that they love it out romping in the snow.   Since I look for those horses every day...it was good to know that I don't have to worry about them since all of you guys answered me.

HOWEVER.........a couple of nights ago on the TV news......they said " Horses rescued from a local neighborhood in Brunswick!"  Huh???   Sure enough, it was the farm behind me. They took out 4 horses that they said had no food or water.....that were very skinny... but they didn't look skinny to me.  They said they had no grass and trees were eaten away.  Maybe...but except for the borderline there are not trees where the horses are...and there was too much snow to see the grass so can't figure that either.     This farm has turned into a petting farm one day a week in the summer...they do Christmas things..Halloween things for kids....hayrides and things like that.  They also open their farm and property for parties,,,wedding and such, in fact I was at a wedding there once and an "art show" in a summer. They didn't even have many places to walk during that art show..can't believe anyone rented it.  But I do think it is their way of surviving and trying to make a buck or two. By watching this video...I get the feeling that perhaps they can't afford to feed those horses.   There was no mention of the other animals they have there, and they do have others....goats,, a donkey ( my favorite ) alpacas, chickens and ducks...among probably others. I remember that story Dyan.

It's one thing to leave healthy horses outside in the winter, but thin, malnourished ones?  Well that's just unacceptable.  They survive quite well outside provided they they are supplied with ample hay to munch on throughout the day (I keep mine a little heavier over winter) and of course plenty of water and salt.  My pony has lived that way for 20 yrs and has never been sick or "off". I do though provide a barn for them to go into when they desire. (which is usually to poop in and then they are headed back outside gggrrr! )

Good for you for questioning it when you did....horses that don't "appear" thin often go overlooked.....they must have been for others to notice too..it's very difficult though to realize the true condition under a winter coat and at a distance.  Horses expel much energy to keep warm in the winter and it is CRITICAL that they are provided enough hay and water to do just that.  A heater is also necessary (IMO) for water buckets and troughs for horses to get enough water that they need in the winter.

More horses saved....yippee.  When they investigate one animal on a property, you betcha they check them all.  They are given requirements to abide by and they do get rechecked.....hopefully the remaining ones are getting better care.

Okay,,,,so I got the story all wrong and wanted to come a clearify it.    It is NOT the farm behind me. They didn't say the name of the farm,,,but Spring Mist Farms was said....and that is the horse trailer in the video....   Just saw another thing on the news this afternoon about it....it was a farm up the street from SMF.......several blocks. Turns out I think SMFs helped get the horses out of there and they used their trailers.    So sorry for the story that was wrong.

Funny.... I believed it since I have not seen a horse out there since the story broke...wonder was is up with that???
