Scary Doctor Appt. for Riley - (mrstjohnson)

Last night during Riley's bath I noticed a penny size blueish/purplish bruise type lump on the back of Riley's ear.  Of course I immediately freaked out and called DH in for full inspection.  We decided it was probably some type of bruise (she's been trying to walk so there's a lot of falling going on).  Well, I thought about and thought about and decided to call the doctor.  To my surprise, they wanted me to bring her in immediately causing an immediate panic attack on my behalf.

Doctor looked at it for 2 seconds and says she has a cavernous hemangioma.  Says she's going to be fine, but wants a dermatologist to look at it, just to make sure.  Ok - panic starts to slow down, but then explains to me what it is...I only heard the words in all CAPS...a collection of BLOOD vessels that start GROWING OUT OF CONTROL FORMING a beign TUMOR and I need to make an appt. at CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL with a doc there (I am paraphrasing here).  I think I had a heart attack right there in the office.  I love her doc, and he is VERY practical (he has 7 kids) and teaches/preaches common sense among parents.  But why oh why do they have to use words like TUMOR.  Don't they realize that strikes immediate panic into a parent's heart.

I am a little concerned since I am nearly positive I have never seen it before (it's in a weird not obvious spot) and they say they can be a concern if they appear and start growing quickly, so I am taking pics of it every day to make sure it doesn't grow anymore.  They say 90% of them go away by the time the child reaches age 9, so that's good.  But what about that 10%, then what.  Ahhhhhh.  This is my worst fear, that my sweet pea will have to have people poking at her etc.  She's just too little for that!  I know we are extremely lucky because she is so healthy, but I can't get myself to settle down thinking something might be wrong with my sweet pea!

Good thoughts your direction. When do you go for your next appointment? I am sure everything will be fine, but I have to agree how you felt. Not having human children, but with my dogs and horses I have been there.

wow I'd freak out too! I hope it isn't anything that grows or progresses or spreads or whatever they do.

JUST GO AWAY THING! leave Miss Riley alone.

Best of luck at the appt with the specialist...I am sure they will have more detailed answers for you.

    Oh Lisa!

I would have freaked out too!!  I'm sure Riley will come through this just fine - but like with all kids this will be only the first of many "heart attacks" to come.  Think ahead to bike riding, roller skating, getting a driver's license, etc.  All things which automatically brings panic to a mother's heart.  Just get Riley checked out with the specialist - and get it confirmed that she'll grow out of it. (I know she will!!!!)

P.S.  Start stockpiling the Lady Clairol now - your gonna need on this bumpy and wonderful ride called "Motherhood".

We can't get into the specialist until April!!  That just blows my mind.  I hope it has stopped growing.  It has to have stopped, it just has to.  Thank goodness it's behind her ear, for that we are lucky, and it should go away on it's own by the time she's 9 or 10...hopefully by the time she's 5.

I would have freaked out, too! And April? That sucks!!!

Here's hoping for a nice, reassuring, positive appointment and lots of good health for all involved.

Don't worry!!! Things WILL be fine!! ;) You are right, it will amost definately go away and not cause any problems. Good luck and try not to worry too much until your appointment. If you want to get in earlier, you can call everyday and tell the front desk people you are willing to come in anytime if they have a cancellation or no-show.

Aw hugs going out to you! That would have freaked me out too. I'm glad you like you pediatrician though. Makes it a lot easier when it really counts! I hope her appt at children's goes well and it turns out to be a bruise and not what the ped. thinks!

Thanks everyone.  I am feeling a little bit better after researching it some more.  I really appreciate the shoulders to lean on.
