Veggie Gardeners?

    Veggie Gardeners?

Who has a vegetable garden or grows any veggies?  I'm seriously thinking about it this year, but I don't have much room to do so.  How much room do you need to get a decent amount of vegetables out of a garden?  I'm not sure what I would want to grow, probably some tomatoes, some peppers, carrots maybe?  Any recommendations for a little garden?  I'm thinking I could do about 8' x 10'... maybe?

You can do several things. First, decide what you want, based on what you like. Remember that some veggies take time to produce, some are quick. Your in Canada so you have what I would term a short growing season, so you could/should start most of your garden with starts as opposed to seeds.

The first thing to do is prepare the ground, then placement of decided plants, I would go to the library and find growing tips for your area, or maybe a garden forum.

Read up on the veggies you like, tomato's need sun and lots of it, lettuce is a "cool" weather plant and does better in the begining of the season and the end, pumpkins take time, zucchini produces like rabbits.....things like that.

here are a couple of articles:

Ya, we typically have about 3-4 months of good growing season here.  I didn't know that tomatoes needed tons of sun.  My sister had a funny thing happen to her once a few years ago.  She brought in a few dump truck loads of fertilized soil to their property so they could get some grass growing.  She covered about 2 acres with it.  It turned out the entire load was seeded through with tomato seeds.  She must have grown a hundred thousand tomatoes that year.  She gave me tons, my parents, her in-laws, she brought some to work everyday and left them in the lunch room.  She made sauce, salsa, you name it.  It was so funny.  Her property looked like a pot field when you first drove into it.  Too bad they aren't perennial.

Her yard is mostly Jack Pine so I guess it gets a fair amount of sun, just never thought about it.  I'm going to have to watch my yard to see where gets sun and at what times.

The sad news: Forget about melons LOL they just take tooo long and your don't have enough warm days....

The good news is you could probably do well with sweet peas, beans, tomatoes (from plants) cucumbers (from plants) beets, zucchini/summer squash (plants) radishes---all things with short time to harvest (or already started) and quite a bit of food for a little space----of course you will need sun for these :)

Beans can be grown on a bush or on vines that climb. I don't know what your space is like but it you have a fence or structure that you can runs vines up---take advantage of it for beans or peas or climbing cherry tomatoes. DO not plant tall stuff to the south/southwest of shorter plants or you will shade them.

That tomato story is hilarious! LOL You've gotten a lot of good info. I would be starting things inside now. Even if you have to transplant to big yogurt containers before you put them outside, they would have a jump on the season. The best tomato we ever had was grown in a 1/2 barrel. It can be placed anywhere on your property.

I have this guy's book and love it. Looks like all the info is on-line:
