Car insurance for young folks?

    Car insurance for young folks?

Anyone have any companies in particular that they hate/love? Right now my top 3 are, I think, Amica, State Farm, and Allstate.

I've had a license for about 8 years, impeccable record (so far! knock on wood), driving a 97 Subaru Outback around New England. I'm 23. I'm looking for cheap insurance that also has very good coverage - I wouldn't mind paying a little more for a really good company because I get nervous about things like that (especially after Janice's experience, yikes!).

    Thank you! Smile

I have State Farm and have been very pleased with their service. We have them for our homeowner's policy also. If I were looking for something less expensive though, I'd check out Geico. I had them many years ago and didn't have any problems with them.

I have Allstate and when we bought our house a little over a year ago and shopped around, they were offering the best rates on all of it.  If I remember correctly, you and your BF are living together, right?  My hubby and I lived together for a long time before we got married and would drive each other's cars.  I checked with the insurance company and we were able to get a policy together before we were married since we lived together and get a multiple driver discount.  Some companies would do it and others wouldn't.  That is something to keep in mind when looking around b/c you may be able to save more overall by doing that.  You might also inquire about getting your renters insurance or any other insurance with them b/c sometimes they offer discounts for having multiple policies as well.  Renter's insurance is very cheap usually and I always thought it was a good idea to have just in case there was a fire or something else that destroyed my belongings.

Wow, good memory! Yep, we are. That's a good idea about the joint policy, and definitely I've been thinking about renter's insurance. BF's mom thinks it's silly, but we have 2 decked-out desktops, a big fancy TV, videogame systems, and a couple of laptops, so if the building's sprinklers went off accidentally or something we could be in big trouble.

    Thanks for the tips! :)

Here's another tip I just found out this last year. I checked in to getting an umbrella policy for $1M liability. The policy costs us $215 per year, but because we have it, our homeowners insurance policy went down as did our car insurance. We were able to drop the liability coverages down on both of those policies and the difference almost pays for the umbrella policy. The umbrella policy protects us from a lawsuit of any kind, any where, and in today's society, I felt it was important for us.

I don't remember, but when we did renter's it was less than $20 a month for something like $45,000 of coverage.  That would hopefully cover clothing, furniture and necessities.  I don't think it is stupid at all.  If you really think about how much it would cost to replace the items you need just to live your normal life, it would be a lot out of pocket.  Just on clothing alone.  You just never know what could go wrong....I always prefer to be safe than sorry.

That is a good idea.  So this is to protect your assets if you were sued for any reason?  I should check into this.  With a pool, I always worry.

We have a pool too and I've always worried a little more since we had it put in. Someone suggested the umbrella policy and I was pleasantly surprised when I discussed it with our agent.  It's definitely worth looking in to.

No.  Not silly at all.  If there's a fire, flood, storm damage - whatever - whoever owns the property you're renting will not be replacing anything except what he/she owns.  You'd be on your own to replace all your own stuff.

If you can get USAA, I've found that their rates and service are great.  However you have to have been in the military or be a family member.

AAA insurance rocks. I was hit once and they picked me up, drove me to the rental care place. Everything was taken care of and I never have had any issues with them for the past 15 years. I also pay a lot less then my buddies here in so cal.

We've had great luck with both Allstate and State Farm -- definitely shop around, when we moved out of state, Allstate used to be the cheapest in NY but they were more in PA and State Farm was hundreds of dollars less per year.  I'm also 23, with a currently clean driving record (they only go back 3 yrs) as is DH.  And, our renter's insurance is about $110/YEAR for about $45k coverage, and because of the multi policy discount, we save about $90/year on our car insurance, so it's nearly FREE.

I definitely like to go with a "better" insurance company -- we've had progressive and others in the past, and I totally feel that I am in better hands with one of the upper companies, like Allstate, State Farm, etc.  Yeah it just my opinion and we've only had one claim while on our own insurance, but still.  The cost isn't that much where I would go to a lower level insurance company without a real office.  However, if someone has a lot of accidents and tickets and one of the big name companies won't insure them, then it's a different story.  But even things like Progressive and Geico aren't more than $5-10 a month different.

Oh, and Allstate was still more expensive even with the safe driver discounts.  But, as I said, it totally depended on state since that wasn't the case at all when we lived in NY.  I'd get a quote or two every year, since as you get older and closer to 25 your insurance will keep going down.

We have Allstate for car and renter's insurance and haven't had any problems, but our cars aren't worth more than $2000 combined so we have PLPD, lol.  DH says our is less than $100 per month which is for both vehicles and the renter's.  Michigan is no-fault and deductibles are outrageous.  Sometimes I secretly wish someone would total the car so I'd have no choice but to get a newer (used) one.

I've got Encompas - which is a branch under Allstate. It's the cheapest around here, along with Geico. Thankfully - I've never had to deal with the insurance people, but I don't think we would have a problem - unless Allstate leaves Fl.....

I have State Farm. The policy is great and I have never had a problem with them. I'm 20 and have been driving for less than 4 years. I also have renters insurance with them. I pay under 80 dollars a month. The only other company I have had experience with is Gieco, it was horrible.
