    Collars: A Doggie Deathtrap?

About two seconds ago.. I looked over and I see Pedro rolling around on the floor, I saw him chewing on something but I was from a distance so I got a bit closer. I did just feed him a few kibbles of food but when I got closer I had saw that his collar had somehow gotten loose enough and was in his mouth and was still around his neck, making it so that he was sort of choking and couldn't close his mouth. Thankfully I unsnapped it in about 3 seconds and he gave me mucho kisses for that one. This is the second time something like this has happened though so I don't know what to do. The last time it only got caught around his leg but I'm honestly considering taking it off for good. (It was 2 finder widths from his neck.. but I guess from them playing or from something it had gotten loose) Any suggestions/advice would be great.

I never leave their collars on unless I am w/ them. I had two simular accidents w/my guys too. It's scary.

Me too! And I like the flat leather buckle collars..not cloth, nylon, snap-ons that are adjustible.

My dogs also all go collarless indoors.  I just use collars when we go out.

My dogs don't wear a collar unless we are out.  The exception is when we are at an Agility trial.  They don't wear a collar there.  I don't want to take a chance on a tag getting hung up on the xpen or crate.  They even run the courses without a collar.  After all they are Florida dogs,  they run barefoot and nekked.  I have seen a dog get his collar without tags get caught on a jump cup.

that would be scary to see! thank goodness you were in the room at the time!

i don't use a collar on my chi because of possible damage to the trachea. I use a harness and just have her tags on the harness and only use it when we are out.

poor little guy. probably scary for him too! [:o]

    breakaway safety collars.

agreed! & ck'd regularly (like once a week @ least) - also the 2 finger rule is to lay the fingers side-by-side on the dog's neck - have seen some ppl that place 1 finger on the neck then the 2nd finger on top of the 1st - no

Maybe microchipping would be an option to consider? I know someone who had a little dog (chi mix) and it didn't have a collar for that reason, it got out one day and had no ID, they haven't seen the dog since.

Those are the cutest! and as far as microchipping, I'm def. saving up for that. I'm not exactly sure how much it is.. but getting 3 dogs at once I'd think would be a bit expensive. I'm going to the vet in a bit so I'll ask then. [:)]

Decide whether you want the HomeAgain chip or the AVID chip.  Then call around to see if there are going to be any microchip "clinics".  Rescues sometimes use the microchips as fund raisers.  Your local Humane Society may have lower cost microchips.

The same thing can happen with flea or tick collars!!

Definitely check the humane society.  I got my dogs microchipped for $10 there.  They used Home Again.  I decided to get Emi microchipped at the vet while she was getting her teeth cleaned because she can be a fear/pain biter and she is also a drama queen when it comes to pain.  They charged me $40 I think and used Avid.  I have to say, I hate Avid.  If you need to change your information you have to call or mail them and they charge for it.  Home Again is done online and there is no cost for information change.

I've heard and I know that our local AC is going to the ISO (european frequency) chip.  Problem is that the last I checked the universal readers couldn't read the ISO chip and the ISO readers couldn't read anything else.  They might have gotten that changed by now.  Don't know.
