Anyone use a beauty school to get their hair cut?

I want to save money on my hair cuts and coloring.  Is going to a beauty school a good way to go?  I have heard they do a decent job for practically nothing.  Also an instructor guides the individual so it's not like one has a total newbie working on your hair.

I have (twice) and wasn't happy at all.  Partly because the girls were very unprofessional (young) and partly because it took soooooo long. Plus they don't have much experience in color yet so my color never turned out quite right. However, I sat there for so long I didn't have them fix it because I couldn't waste any more time.

The reason it takes so long is because the instructors have to come check everything and they are usually busy checking 50 other customers at the same time.

I have, but it was while my sister was a student :) I wouldn't go for a color on your first shot, I'd go for something a little less permanent, to see if you like it. If it's a bad cut, meh, it grows back, but color? Eeesh, that's usually hard to reverse.

I went to one for about a year when I was trying to cut my expenses significantly.  I had a basic hairstyle - fairly long without any layers.  The cut was simple enough that the students did a decent job, but they didn't wash my hair first - just sprayed it with a water bottle.  At the time, I colored my hair with semi-permanent all-over color (no highlights), and they used Redken products, so I had them color it a few times.  Again, decent job, but somewhat messy (i.e, lots of color on my face).  Once I let them try a couple highlights, but I wasn't happy with the results, and my hair felt like straw where they left the chemical on it too long.  But, for $25, I could get a cut and basic color, so it was a big help to my budget.

I've been 2x.  I went to the tech. high in our area and they have a class that does hair/nail etc.  I didn't let them cut my hair just did the nail thing, but it wasn't a huge class so the instructor was able to do alot of supervision, and they got a lot of practice b/c the local nursing homes brought their patients in.

When I was in college a teacher brought her salon students over and were offering free hair cuts.  I didn't want anything complex so it was fine, but I'd be leary about going to one if I wanted something more then a simple cut.  Like Tacran said, they didn't wash the hair, mostly they cut it dry, but with some spritzing.
