    Dogs and the Entertainment Industry

I was thinking about this yesterday.  When they make a movie, write a book, or even take pictures of a certain breed of dog and the movie, book or pic becomes mainstream I think it can be very harmful to the breed.

So I was wondering, what breeds do you think have suffered because of our entertainment industry?  Give specific examples.  It can be breeds from the past too.

I could only think of a couple

    Weimaraners - William Wegman...Photographer
    Dalmations - 101 Dalmations...Movies

    Collies - Lassie.
Cockers - Lady and the Tramp.
    JRTs - Frazier.

Pit Bulls- Rap videos. DMX in particular had a habit of putting pits in his videos, usually with them trying to maul each other while being restrained by heavy chains. He was convicted of animal cruelty a few years ago. [&o]

Actually, I just found one of his videos on Youtube. It gives you a good idea of the image of pits that he pushes.

    Warning though, adult language:

I second this, by hearing all the negatives about pit bulls I'm scared to ever own one. ;People always talk about how they have "lock jaw" and once they bite that's it; there's no letting go.  In my mind I realize that the owners are the cause of this. But man, they've gotten a bad rap.

Another breed that probably suffered was the Saint Bernadard from the movie Cujo (in the early 80's).  When I was a kid I associated this breed with aggression until I read more about them & realized they're so sweet.

Chihuaha's have become so popular with taco bell commercials & all the hollywood startlets toting them around

Legally Blonde didn't help the "accessory dog" image of Chihuahuas or toy breeds in general. Though in the movie she was at least a responsible pet owner I guess! (I appreciated how she carried around her own doggy walk bags, lol. If a famous prissy character can pick up her dog's poop, you can pick up your dog's!)

I wish I could bring my dog into the movies to see "Underdog" when it comes out. My roommate had a beagle in college and I loved it (Jackson) He was so ill-behaved but just TOO cute for words. The movie looks adorable.

Check out this "blooper reel" from the film -

Anyone own any breeds featured in this movie?

What a coincidence, I just posted a link to a Bill Wegman video. I didn't know his videos harmed the breed (Weimaraners) - how so?

I think some folks get Weims now considering them "ojects d'art" rather than a true sporting dog with certain energy, and mental stimulation needs. Let's face it...Wegman works his dogs to get them to sit still that long, or he found someonewho breeds a very staid, relaxed temperament. The average person who likes the look...might get one from a man who breeds them to hunt and things might not work out so well.

But again...it's all about the person buying the dog, and the person selling the dog...and both parties interest in education and the breed as whole...rather than as either a status symbol or a moneymaker.

I have had red & white Beagles...they're lovely. But still Beagles and still in need of the exercise and upbringing a Beagle needs to bring it's best qualities to the fore..and minimize the issues that could become a problem in the wrong environment.

Yes Gina that's exactly what I was thinking.  I love Wegman's pictures, I think they are beautiful.  But I also think people saw/see the pictures and purchase a puppy without researching the breed and end up with a high strung, out of control dog.  Let's not forget where there is demand someone is going to supply.  Whether they are reputable or not.

I have to say using a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as "Sweet Polly Purebred" is absolutely inspired if you are going by breed temperament.  It's just a shame Wally Cox isn't around to do Underdog's Voice.  It's the dog version of Walter Mitty.  So many of us aspire to that.  I don't want to HAVE an underdog -- I want to BE Underdog!

wegman's dogs never fooled me.... i have cousins in orlando with a weim.... he was NUTS. when i was a teen my sisters and i spent a few days with this cousin. she had a huge pool and a huge house... so we were all swimming and having fun, when she let "Fritz" out of his crate... he came charging into the pool... the "dad" threw his basketball into the pool and the dog swam around snapping at the ball the whole time. if the ball came near you, Fritz would snap at you, with intentions of biting you, to make sure you left the ball alone. he did that to my sister, narrowly missed her upper arm... then came towards me with that ball.... and yeah i smacked the crap out of him because he snapped at me. i dont normally hit dogs, but he deserved it. my aunt got two black eyes from him, different occasions within days of each other because he snapped at her, once in the pool and once out of. the hospital staff didnt believe her that she was bitten by a dog. they assumed she was a battered wife.. and she looked it too with blood shot eyes, and great green and purple bruises on both cheeks....
i know they arent all like Fritz, but he was an example of the results of a bad breeder and people getting a dog for looks only and ignoring the basics of training. he had snapped at their kids too (ages 2 and 4 at the time) they had to use a pinch collar on him and kept him crated when guests came over... why they let him out while kids were swimming i'll never know....
on the other side of the coin... my brother had a weim before i was born. he was legendary for being a sweet lovable dog.. so i know they arent all like Fritz.
honestly i think getting a dog because you saw it in a movie can be either good OR bad. it depends on the lengths you're willing to go to work with it. we all have our reasons for getting a dog, and there is no shame in getting a particular breed because you saw it in a movie. just be careful HOW you get it.... and who from.

lol i loved Walter Mitty, but i hated the Underdog cartoon..... oh wow was he annoying! and badly drawn! seems there was a period in animation where people were striving to make lousy Rocky and Bullwinkle type art!
i think the movie would be cute, but i dont know if i'll go to theatres to see it....
