    Breeder Websites

    Hi,

For those of you who have your own websites (or want one), I was wondering...

    1.   What do you wish you could do/have on your website?
    2.    Where do you go for website hosting today?
    3.    What kind of web-enabled tools do breeders need?
    4.     Would web hosting targeted to breeders be interesting to you?

I am putting together web hosting product for breeders.  Any feedback (positive, negative) would be appreciated.

    Thank You!

I'm not a breeder, but I spend a lot of time browsing their sites and do web design myself.  If I were a breeder, I'd definitely want a tool for generating pedigrees (so I wouldn't have to do the clumsy process of making tables, etc), a simple image gallery, and web forms for inquiries or applications.  I've seen all of these things on many sites.  Some are very nicely done while others look like the person didn't know what they were doing and it's a mess for the use to browse.

I think for long term success your first priority would be do determine how your going to weed out responsible breeders from back yard breeders BECAYSE if you have just one BYB on your site the whole project will loose credibility in a heart beat.

I agree, web forms are definitely the "biggie". The page needs to be enabled to accept applications, deposits/paypal, litter notifications, other various inquiries. The forms speed up the process and after I installed a web form, it really cut down on the buyers who only wanted to waste my time and allowed me better insight to each indivigual buyer. I also use HTML quite often and could not operate my site without it. I generate all my pedigrees with an HTML program, and also use it for links back to advertising sites, which make my site easier to find. You also have to consider disc space - I have 20MB of space and use about half of that. But I need that space for the amount of pics/graphics I use. Also figure into the equation how easily the site can be updated ... I host and design my own site and end up changing pics about 1-2x weekly when we have a litter on the ground. The site I used before was a major hassle in this regard, and finally, I switched to Tripod. It's a free site but crap, I couldn't be happier with it's ease of use & features. This is my site: http://houndmuzic.tripod.com
