    My Neo Puppy

    Hello All,

I had originally posted this in health but not getting any responces...please forgive me for posting here in the 'General Forum' but I am in need of some help concerning my dogs health.

I am a first timer to this board. It has come to desperation for me to try and figure out what the problem is with my Lab/Rott 4 year old Neo.

My family came out for a visit from Florida end of March for a week. My niece and nephew brough some sort of 7 day stomach virus along with them. After the fam left, about 3 days later Neo was vomiting just a yellow liquid. About a week later he stopped eating all together and also started having a runny stool which later had blood show up in it. His vomit also had little red spots of blood. I took him to the vet...who said there was alot of 'mushy' build up in the intestines, they quickly put him on antibiotics some oral and some through shots. He never has had a fever. His x-rays showed nothing in his system like a rock etc. All of his blood work came back negative for Parvo and Girardia (spelling) and all of his organs were working properly and his white and red blood cell counts were normal. 3 weeks into his illness he began eating again a bland diet I cooked for him of chicken and rice with peas and carrots. Slowly he began to perk up...wag his tail, want to run and play outside and his stool got back to normal. He was fine for a few days and now he is back to having a runny kind of mucus looking stool...same color and smell as when he is well.  There is no blood in it right now...but there was a spot or two there last night. He also vomited again last night. He had started eating his dog food (Pedigree...he is picky and only wants that), but as of last night I have him back on a bland home cooked diet.

Does this sound familiar to any of you? Any suggestions? I am scared out of my mind because I don't want to lose my buddy.

How old is the food? Sounds like this may be realted to the food itself if he was fine until you started feeding it again.

Anyone know if Pedigree dry food was in the recall?
    • Gold Top Dog
Pedigree has not been recalled.  BUT -- I did a quick search and it looks like most of the Pedigree dry foods have corn gluten meal, high on the ingredient list.  At this point I consider any gluten meal a very suspect ingredient.  I would NOT feed that food anymore if it has corn gluten meal in it, and I would call your vet, describe what you said in your post, tell him that the food you were using contained that ingredient and ask for kidney function tests on your pup, ASAP.

The current bag of food was just a few days old when he began eating it....
Today I put him on SureGuard for any parasites and apparently it also kills Girardia. He is eating liver with rice and peas and carrots...I also put some pumpkin in it. He is one happy pup chowing on that stuff.

I have not seen Pedigree on the recall list YET...I check it almost everyday.

He had a blood test a few weeks ago that tested all of his organs and they were all fine....

I suppose they did a fecal flotation when you took him to the vet. Did they happen to mention the possibility of Coccidia ? It is a single cell parasite that infect the intestine and when it multiplies, attacks the intestine lining and produces bloody diahreea and vomiting. The parasite contaminates the soil and "waits" to be ingested by a new host. To my knowledge, it does not show in blood tests.

Did you take Neo to any new place where he could have ingested some soil or laid down on some contaminated soil and then licked himself ?

Even if they did a fecal at the vet, what can happen is that if the number of coccidia oocysts is low at the time of the fecal, they can be missed. Therefore, repeated tests are sometimes needed to detect this problem. A lot of dogs are coccidia carriers but they only have flare ups occasionnally; it seems that stress, among other things, can play a role in triggering a flare up (I am thinking about your family visit).

I would bring him back to the vet for a fecal and if this is negative, ask if you can bring other samples over the next few days (at my vet, you do not need to bring the dog every time).

If he is found positive for Coccidia, they will give him medicine to slow down the reproduction of the parasite, put him on a very bland diet and tell you to watch for dehydration.

I hope this helps. Poor Neo, I hope you find out what is wrong soon.

Hate to say it, but due to a similar issue with my dog, just vomiting a ton no diarreha, he may have inflammatory bowel disease. If you can afford it I'd try switching to Natural Balance Potato and Duck food as it can help some dogs with controlling it, my dog unfortunately it didn't help. I say if you can afford it as it's rather pricy compared to foods like Pedigree or even Purina. Somebody else we know who's Rott had inflammatory bowel did well on Natural Choice Oatmeal and Chicken. My dog has to be on drugs to control her vomiting, and her's started out the yellow bile and went to bloody specks to bloody before we got her on drugs.

If it keeps up while he's on the Pedigree and is fine when you're feeding him raw food, I'd say this is your problem and would suggest trying one of the foods I just recommended, if that doesn't work, talk to your vet about trying Metronidazole as that's what's keeping Dizzy's vomiting under control. She's been able to go to once a day at the lowest dose my vet has and it's still under control.

    Hope you figure this out.

I don't think I heard that name Coccidia when Neo was being treated by the Vet. He was an ongoing patient for about 4 days...when the blood stopped in his vomit and stool the Vet said 'this ends our relationship'. I don't know if it was because he felt Neo was all better or if he was just stumped and not a good Dr....I am planning on taking him in to his normal Vet tomorrow (I was in Canada at the time his illness peaked) and I will mention Coccidia.

Hi Shiva...love then name. I have friends from India :-)

I can always afford to spend money on Neo, he is worth every penny I spend on him. Neo never had full blown blood in his vomit...there were specks before, but now none at all. He vomitted yesterday and a little this morning again, but compare it to a few weeks ago and it's like night and day. As for his stool...there was a spot of blood this morning but none this afternoon and he had no bowel movement this evening and again, the change from his stool from a few weeks ago where they were black like tar to now is night and day. He is wanting to eat and begging for food...he is drinking lots of water. He has never been dehydrated during this illeness even when he was not eating, he was still drinking.

Where can I find the Natural Choice or Balance foods?
    • Gold Top Dog
petco carries natural balance and nutro natural choice. petsmart carries the nutro but not the natural balance. there may be other stores in your area that carry these foods as well. check their store locators in the links below...

    nutro:

    natural balance:

we had amelia on the aformentioned nutro natural choice chicken, rice, and oatmeal kibble. she has a sensitive stomach and did fine on this food. it comes in a light blue bag.

good luck! hope neo gets well soon! [:D]

I consider Natural Balance a better food than Nutro.

My Dalmatian had similar symptoms with his recurring colitis. He did wonderfully on Eukanuba Low Residue veterinary diet. It's only available through vets, but it works well for digestion problems. My sister worked as a vet tech for many years and the clinic she worked for fed that diet to nearly all the dogs they treated and boarded because it nearly eliminated the vomiting and stool problems they had due to stress and diet change.

There are commercial foods out there with "better" ingredients but be careful using them with a dog with colitis/IBD/pancreatitis issues. I put poor Blackhawk's tummy through a lot of stress trying to find a "better" food when he was doing extremely well with the Euk Low Res.

I am now convinced that Neo's problems have come from his food. He has been back on home cooked meals for 3 days and last night and all today his stools have been nearly and completely back to normal. He has not vomited at all today or last night. I know Pedigree is not on the recall list so his problem must be a developed allergy or just a new sensitive tummy issue. He is still having his 'Milk Bone' treats, but his bagged food is in the dumpster.
