    Can dogs get somonila?
Is there a way to tell if a raw chicken has Somonila?

Lots of people feed their dogs raw meat. In fact, lots of peopl feed their dog ONLY raw meat - including the bones! A dog's natural diet is raw meat and bones (but never ever ever cooked bones as they are hardened and will splinter). Dogs have much better immune systems than we do, especially considering they have evolved to eat raw meat.

Also, remember, it's only been the last 50 or so years that dogs have been fed kibbles, but their digestive system evolved thousands of years ago.

it looks like Salmonella can be a problem for dogs and people also

It can, but because of the dog's physiology, it's rare for them to have an issue with it.

I feed a modified raw diet to an immune-suppressed dog, and she does fantastically well.

    Yes.

    Probably not.

Yes, but you'd have to take it to a lab first.

You do need to balance the phosphorus in the meat with the proper amount of calcium - bone, bone meal, or egg shells.

I don't bother with the boneless. My dogs get it with the bone in...

You could lick it and wait and see if YOU get sick.
Salmonella is on the surface of the food. If you're worried, you can rinse the meat in warm water and it'll wash away most of it. Dogs hold their food in the acid of their stomach for hours which tends to kill any icky little organisms like salmonella.
Note if you feed too much boneless meat in one meal you'll get diarrhea, and if you feed too much boneless meat over time you'll make your dog sick. You need to balance meat with bone (or bone subsitute, such as calcium supplements).

is it ok to give her a raw pork chop or steak with the bone in it?
    • Gold Top Dog
I would say no on the raw pork chop, or raw pork in general b/c of the risk of parasites. But I'm not a nutritionist, I could be wrong.. I feed my dog raw and from the research I have done it is unlikely a dog will get salmonella. The biggest risk is to you, but if you take proper precautions (like you normally would with your own food) and don't let the dog lick all over your face I'm pretty sure it will be ok.

raw commercial pork in the U.S. is perfectly ok nowadays, they've eliminated the parasite risk. It might get a bit expensive feeding your dog on chops and steaks, though. I go for the cheaper cuts-- pork necks are a staple in my household.

My dogs and my friends' dogs (and total strangers' kibble dogs) lick all over my face, very routinely. I don't wash dog dishes often at all. I feed raw, and none of us have gotten sick. I have three sets of friends (couples) who all have multiple dogs (ten total). They all feed raw, don't wash bowls every time, allow dogs to sleep on furniture, and allow dogs to lick faces.

If you are not actually french kissing the dog ([:'(]) you should be fine with face licking.  Salmonella isn't absorbed through the skin -- you have to ingest it, so you would need to actually swallow some doggie saliva with the organism in it.  Wipe your mouth if you get major licks right after the dog eats raw meat and are super ;paranoid (which I am not), but this seems like an extremely unlikely transmission route.

But, human stomachs are much more sensitive than dog ones.  So I don't agree with "lick it yourself and see if you get sick."  (I couldn't tell if that was a joking suggestion or not.)  You could get sick from raw meat in lots of situations that would not bother your dog one bit.

I wouldn't feed a porkchop or steak with bone in it, just for the simple fact the bone has been cut into an odd shape by the butcher, and may make the edges/peices jagged.  Your probably better off going with pork or beef ribs instead.
