"Dog" Names

A lady I've done some training work for has a really darling papillon named Zephyr, after the monkey in the Babar books (it's a children's series about an elephant. :P) I've also known a BC by that name, who was a doll.

My foster Chihuahua last August was named Queso (he was white with orange markings that looked rather like he'd had cheese dip spilled on him).

What about something like "Cowboy" or "Cowgirl"? That would be super cute if the dog was a black and white parti colored. A friend of mine had a dog named Wag The Dog. He only responded to his FULL name. He sounds like he was a super cute, fun dog. Tidbit is a favorite dog name of mine, but it's pretty popular.

I like "place of origin" names too...
I think Poms are from what is now northern Germany / Poland...

How about for boys....                          For Girls.....
    -Benno  (bear)                                     -Regina     (queen)
-Etzel    (noble)                                   -Serafina   (fiery one)  (you could call her Finn for short)
    -Kuno    (brave)                                   -Aurel
-Meino  (strength)                                -Kaja        ("Kaya"- short for Karolina)
-Tekla                                                 -Alena      (short for Magdalena, Maggie)
    -Arkadios

    Have fun....
    I love picking names....
When I was very young, I wanted to call my dog Taxi....
So when I stood on the step to call him I had to scream..."TAXI...." and make all the cars stop....Stick out tongue

awww i love all these suggestions everyone... they are getting my brain to be more creative about names now!

    Regina & Alena are awesome!

Kuno, Kaowboi (cowboy, hehe), Rambo, and Benno are awesome too! hehe

Even though I'm German (and so are Poms) I was thinking about all the cool Greek names too... I'll have to google some cool once hahaha

    Some of my favorites:

    • Eclipse (I'm probably naming my next dog this)
    • Luna
    • Aurora
    • Star
    • Nitro (cool for a male I think, esp if he's got lots of energy)

Has anyone ever gotten a puppy and take a couple of days to figure out the name?

Because I feel like I want it to reflect the personality but this is something I will not know untill we have the puppy. And from there I would then want to find a creative way to express it.

My friend rescued her dogs and changed the names so I don't see why you can't wait...

    My favorite Greek names are:
Girls:   Chara - means "happiness, joy" or Aella - means "whirlwind
Boys: Adonis - means "lord" or Nyx - means "night"

or Psyche for either - means "soul"

Let's see the Poms I know are

Bruno, Gizmo, Mini Me, Toby and Kelsey.  There was one more male, he'll come to me. . .

I almost always name my dogs before I get them. Emma was named for about two years, before I got her. My next couple of dogs are already named. I just pick the dog that goes with the name. They'll usually walk up and tell me that's their name, and I know that's my dog. I named Teenie the day I got her, and it had nothing to do with her personality. She was ridiculously fat. I was being sarcastic and called her a "Teenie Weenie". She rushed over, waggling and happy, and it stuck.

Cupcake would be a cute name for a Pom,  too. I'm a big fan of food names.  I groom a toy Poodle named "Milkshake". She's pretty dang cute! Her mom's name was Penney. Her sisters are Cocoa Chanel, Lilly, and something else... I've groomed the whole litter, several times... City names are kind of cool, too. My friend has a Boxer named "Reno". Something like "Phoenix"  might be cool, too. I've always thought "Phoenix" would be a cool name for a rescue dog. I decided, one day, that if I'd named Emma that, I could call her "Phoe Phoe" LOL. Nobody would get it, but it'd be cute.

Bremen would be a great Pom name! I just like the looks of that... Now *I* need a Pom, hehehe.

I think it depends a lot whether it's a male or female.  And I think it matters what the pup looks like too.  For example, even colour can influence name.

"Kiera" means little dark one in Gaelic and I think it goes well with the name you have already (although maybe Kayla and Kiera are too simialr sounding?)

I love "Zephyr".  I think it comes from the Greek for "west wind", or it is the name of a god of the west wind or something.  It's come to mean a very light breeze or anything really light and fine.  I think it is a beautiful sounding name and would fit a little girl-pom.  Also, it makes me think of The Zephyr Song by the Chillis.

I also love Serafina.  Makes me think of Serafina Pekkala (out of Pullman's Dark Material's trilogy).

For boy-dogs, I love the idea of bringing back "traditional" dog names that no one uses any more.  Like FIDO for example.  I think Fido would be a great name for a little fluffy dog.

I also think Butch would be a great name for a pom.  Although it would probably stop being funny after about 10 minutes.

DH is convinced that the next dog we have will be a JRT and he wants to call it "Small".  He just thinks it would be great to say "he's small" meaning, well, that he is small, but also that he is CALLED Small.  It's the British sense of humour.  Move along, move along, there's nothing to see here...

    How about Fenway???

    • Gold Top Dog

    Pomeranian <3
"Leibe" is the german word for "Love"

    Liebe is love.

Ich liebe dich. I love you.

But I thought of another name. Lady Fuzzbottom of Lazenby. Lady or Fuzzy for short.

Also, german personal names might fly under your guy's radar. Gisele, for example. Hilde or Hildegard. My mother's father was from Germany and his last name, americanized, was Cook. No doubt, from a german word such as kuch. So, you could call her "Cookie" (my mom's preferred nickname for herself).
