Purebreds Vs Cross Breeds Vs Mixies

    Hello Dog Fans & Lovers!

I thought this would be an interesting general dog discussion.
What do you perfer out of them?
Cross breeds means two purebreds bred to make a new dog. ie: lab/poodle.
Whats your thoughts, feelings, etc on these three catagories? (sp?)

Anything dog related, I would love to hear it!!

I love all dogs, purebreds, cross breeds, mixies. That's Me

To me, a crossbreed IS a mix.  I have nothing against mixed breed dogs except that I don't think they should be bred intentionally for a profit (i.e. the designer dog industry).

I like purebreds in that I can trace my pup's ancestry and buy from lines that are excellent for the purpose I have in mind for my dog.  I have worked at a humane society for 2 years and absolutely love all of the dogs that come through there and will more than likely adopt my next dog from a shelter as I already have my working dog in progress.

you again? lol you'll get the same replies most likely as you did from the other forum. but welcome anyway [:D]

I have come to a new conclusion on this subject. My new conclusion is this: From now on, I will only get dogs that need me. There are a ton of husky crosses in shelters across America and Canada. Any one of them trained young enough, will make fine sled dogs for the kind of dog sledding I do. I don't need the Alaskan Husky bred sled line dogs as I don't race. I am just fine taking a quick trip across the lake or giving the kids a ride.

So purebred, crossbreeds, and mutts are welcome. But I will not buy another dog for anything more than an adoption fee from a local shelter. Or not so local.[:D]

I will probably own mostly purebreds from now on because I want to get into showing, but as far as which makes the better pet, I think they all do.

If I didn't have very specific needs for my dogs, I'd never get anything but a shelter dog again. I love poodle mixes and big ol' hairy Beardie, OES, or terrier mixes.

But I despise the whole designer dog craze. It's insane. The breeders spread the most ignorant statements about the advantages of their dogs over purebreds, and they take advantage of the American thirst for the latest, greatest, newest, biggest, smallest, whatever - while the very same mixes they purposefully breed are available in shelters all over the US.

    I like them all too.

I also love all dogs and couldn't imagine turning one away because of it's breed.  And, my DH had a mutt named Zippy that our best guess was a GSD/dobie and I loved her sooooo much.

But, given a choice I'd choose a purebred.  And, that's purely because I like knowing what I'm getting.  I like being able to research a breed to learn about different aspects of the dog.   And, I don't want to have to guess which ones I'd need to research with a mixed breed.

I agree that a "cross breed" is a mixed breed. My current dogs and all of my future dogs will be dogs that need a home, whether purebred or mixed breed. Shelters are full of both, whether purebred or mixed.

2 of my 4 dogs are "designer breed" - golden doodle, golden retreiver (usually dame) and standard poodle - both of mine are re-homes although I got both while still puppies (1 less than 12 weeks) - why breed anything that will not have a forever home, care & love?

all my babies are re-homes - 3 mixes, 1 I was told was pure bred put pet quality (shih tzu) - so what? I love them, I provide for them - I had a purebreed Bichon that I had papers for but was not what I considered a good breedable bitch as she was too large (bone structure) for her standard - I loved her dearly & will never replace her - but her being a "pure" or mix would have made no difference

I like them all and I don't think one is any better than the other, it just depends on what you're looking for.  I have very specific wants as far as temperament, size, body structure, etc. so when I look at dogs I look at breeders or the breed rescue for a specific pure breed.  I like the breed rescue the best since there are plenty of dogs that need homes, you can still get a purebred from excellent lines, and the foster families know everything about the dog so you have a better chance at finding the perfect dog.  I work at a Humane Society and I love our dogs, but I'm not convinced I could find my perfect match when we know so little about the dogs.  My husband doesn't have many requirements for a dog, so he'll definitely get one from a shelter and it can be mixed or whatever makes him happy.

I think that purebreds are better for me.  The reason being that I do my research as to temperment of the sire and dam, as well as speaking constantly to the breeder of the pup.  I also will be able to research the history of the entire line.

I just feel that having a purebred dog gives me an ability to know what to expect in terms of health issues and temperment.

That being said, I would never turn my nose at any mixed breed dog.  I love all dogs regardless of parentage.  There is no dog out there that is not deserving of a loving home.

Why benefits does the breed receive from being tiny and therefore incapable from handling large cattle?

Don't say that to the Corgi people.

Dogs from the sporting group---faves being Golden Retrievers, Irish Setters, English Setters, and pointers, all of which i grew up with/have owned and this covers over 50 years  Also, altho hounds are not sporting group, they are used for hunting (most) and i do love hounds.

I actually love all dogs, pure and mixed, but do prefer larger ones.  At this moment i have two ;pure blood goldens and an adopted golden mix.  Most do take her for pure golden, but she isn't.  HOWEVER, she is loved with every fiber of my heart, just as the pure ones are.  How can anyone look into a dog's eyes--l small, large, mid size, long hair, short hair, no hair,  black, brown, white, grey, yellow and anything in between, solid, spotted, patch work, long tail, short tail, no tail, curled tail, straight tail, long legs, short legs, stand up ears, floppy ears, pure blood or mixed and be able to turn you back without a tug at your heart, a desire to pet or hug that dog.  I can't.
