Crate Rcommendations For Cars, PLEASE Help!!

Since I got my tax refund, I'm thinking of using my "splurge" portion on a good crate for traveling.  My future dog is crate trained, I already have a VERY sturdy nylon crate, and I got a seat belt car harness, but I'm told the dog gets nervous about the car.  I think she might be more comfortable in a crate rather than the harness, and I don't want to harness an unpredictable dog.  I've been reading through old threads on crates and have learned that a good wire crate would be best - I understand the lower the gauge, the better?

The problem - we have a 2000 Mecury Sable (that I HATE!), like this:

For some reason, I've always had issues getting larger things into the back seat.  Even laundry baskets can be a challenge.  It seems the doors don't open at a wide enough angle, among other things.  You can see how the door opening is rounded, so things with corners just don't go in, even if their dimensions do fit once inside the car.

The dog is a German Shepherd, from what I can tell, I would say she's on the small side for GSDs.  I would like to find a quality wire crate big enough for a GSD but will somehow fit into the car.  Maybe one that collapses flat so I can wedge it in there and then open it up?

Any recommendations from people with large dogs and cars?

I'm not really sure how to go about this besides going to pet stores and asking if we can test the crate before buying.

Testing the crate is a must--especially if it is a wire folding crate.

    Here's why:

I bought a "fold down" crate and put it in my Caravan. I had measured the crate and pulled out a seat to make room. The assembled crate would fit in the space.

BUT as I went to open and assemble the crate it quickly became clear that the assembly process takes up more room than the assembled unit because of the way you have to swing the panels. I couldn't even turn the crate to take advantage of the vertical height of the van. I ended up pulling out another seat. I could put the seat back in next to the crate no problem.

Crap!  I really don't see any possible way of getting a 42" or 48" (recommended size for GSD) into the car pre-assembled.

What brand was yours?  I'll try something else.

Hate to say it, but I doubt a crate for a GSD will fit in your car. A nice 36" wire crate barely fits in my Subaru hatchback and the only way I can assemble it in the car is because I have the added hatchback area to open it up in. Sounds like the seatbelt and some gradual training on riding in the car is your best bet in this situation.

eta I can't get it in my car assembled and it's only 36" long, 22" wide

How about going after the source of the problem?  The dog may have become convinced that she will get car sick or that trips usually go to the vet.

    Car training:

After that taking the dog on longer and longer trips to fun places may help.

She is nervous of the car (and other things) because a previous owner beat her.  Before that, she enjoyed going in the car.

I can't gradually train her b/c it's going to be a 2 hr + drive just to pick her up.

So would you guys recommend getting one of those pet barriers then?  Should I try to harness her the first time, or just give her some time practicing with the harness and keep my fingers crossed for our first ride?  My nylon crate is huge but because of the way it assembles, I'm almost positive I can get it in our car.  It's not one of those cheap "beach" or "camping" nylon crates - it has a metal frame and the "mesh" part is more like rubber, three cats in there with claws did nothing - but if it's less safe than the dog sitting with no restriction except for a pet barrier, I won't use it.

I got my wire crate from PetEdge I think it is 31 1/2, by 28, by 42.

My solid crate which is easier to shove in and turn is 30 by 27 by 40 at least that is what is says on it.

If the recommended size is 42 long then that would be my wire crate---I just looked at the website.
    Hmmmm

How do you think she would do with some carseat harness practice, plus someone riding in the backseat with her?

I'm sure she'd be fine after a few tries, but I don't know what to do about our original ride together.  I don't want the breeder to think I'm not prepared, but if I can't get a crate in the car, I can't get a crate in the car, and I won't harness and tie down a dog that is nervous and could flip out (I'll be the only one in the car).  Once I have her, I plan on having her wear the harness for a few walks until she is comfortable and I'm satisfied with the fit, and then we will try short rides in the car to fun places with lots of treats.

why not rent or borrow someone's minivan to go pick her up with? then you could crate her and work on her car fears later on.

I would go with a pet barrier. Trying to get a crate of that size in a car of that size will be a major PITA.

Hmmm....it's a good idea, but we're going straight up to our cottage for several weeks of bonding time.  My parents have a Ford wagon, but I sincerely doubt my mom would part with it (it's the rest of my family's family car) and she'll need it for vacation.  I love minivans and really wish I had one.  They are ideal for our long trips with camping equipment and now dogs.  When we get a different car, we're going to look into minivans.  I can't rent right now b/c I'm 22 and the insurance for my age is $100/day additional charge.

Just heard back from the breed rescue person who knows Chop and says she's a small GSD and will fit in a 36", especially if it's mainly for travel (doesn't have to be as roomy).

ETA:  I just heard she is about 60lbs and 22" tall so she can fit in a smaller crate.

I'll be the only one in the car.

There isn't a family member, friend, or neighborhood teenager that you might be able to convince to go with you?  Does anyone near you have a large vehicle and a teenager that needs some driving experience?

It's not that there's no one, it's that I'm not going from picking her up to home, I'm going on "vacation" for two weeks at our cottage to spend time with her before she meets my cats and my husband (because she's been beaten and fears men and because I have several cats, I need her to trust me and listen to me before we start working on letting others into my "pack").
