Here's a groomer horror story for you....

As some of you know, I dogsit for my mom's friends Samoyed named Whisper the Big White Fuzzy...

My mom's friend takes her to get groomed at Petsmart. She tells the groomer to clip down her belly. A little while later my friend gets a call that her belly is a bit matted. My friend says no biggy, her undercoat is growing in and it's not uncommon hence the reason why she brought her in to get her belly clipped. The groomer informs her that it will take longer to groom her. No biggy as it's not uncommon to take over an hour to groom the Fuzz. Now what my friend didn't expect was this...

Needless to say, when my friend saw this hot mess she damn near fainted. The groomer told her she was seriously matted, which I find hard to believe as the Fuzz gets groomed on a regular basis, and that she fell off of the grooming table. My friend was livid, demanded a refund which she didn't get because the manager who is in charge of that was not there. Unfortunately, my friend couldn't get into it as she's leaving on a flight to Alaska today. What we can't understand is what on earth was going through the groomers mind that he would shave a Samoyed down like this? Nevermind the fact that it's WINTER outside. This poor animal looks horrible!! Indifferent

Awwww...that's just ridiculous!! I had a Samoyed and had to keep the tummy and groin area clipped pretty short because of little mats, but to shave the dog like that is just insane. I'm not sure how I'd have reacted, but it wouldn't have been pretty Super Angry

Dang! If that happened to my dog, I would have hit the roof!! The groomer should have specified that they where thinking about shaving the poor thing! I hope your friend talks to the manager when they get back from Alaska!

OMG!!  Poor baby!  And this gal left the groomer still able to walk and talk?  I think I might have killed her in cold blood!

Have to say after working at groomer's and knowing groomers, I tend to give the groomer the benefit of the doubt on the issue of matted dogs. In the first picture the dog looks unbrushed to me and like it could be matted. Most groomers don't want to just shave dogs for no good reason and more often than not when I have met dogs who were "not matted but shaved anyway" the dog really was matted and was matted again once the hair grew back.

That said, the groomer should have told your friend the dog needed shaved down due to matting when they called her.

One thing to keep in mind is that the first 3 pictures are over 2 years old. Those were the only pictures I had uploaded in Photobucket. The Fuzz has been getting professionally groomed since she was a wee Fuzz and has NEVER had a grooming problem up until now. While my friend and I did laugh at the way she looks, as she looks ridiculous, my friend is mad that they shaved her like this. When she spoke to the groomer, he made no mention of having to shave her completely down. I'm sure if he did, my friend would've ran down there to collect her dog because never in the history of Whispers life has a groomer ever suggested shaving her bare like that. Considering that the dog gets groomed professionally on a regular basis, has never been shaved like that in the past nor ever been told she needed to be shaved like that, my friend doesn't understand why they did that. Granted, I don't know much about grooming dogs but if a dog is professionally groomed on a regular basis is it possible for a dog to get completely matted where it would need to be shaved? The poor dog looks like she's got a feather duster hanging out of her rear. Either way, I took a lot of pictures for my friend and she will speak to Petsmart when she gets back.

OMG, poor dog, I would have been really really, upset if this was my dog.

    Yikes!

    Was this a new/different groomer?

I saw a pic of a shaved-bare-as-a-baby's-bottom cairn terrier.  Not a pretty site.

When I had my Samoyed, I groomed her myself and I did it on a regular basis (2-3 x a week). Oddly, other than her tummy area, her tail was the only other problem spot and they seemed to get the tail all nice and fluffy on Whisper, so I'm still not understanding what happened. The only reason I even clipped my girl's tummy/groin area was because it was such a sensitive place to have to work on a mat, even a tiny one, it was just easier. Otherwise, grooming her wasn't a problem.

They do have that wooly undercoat and I can see where it could get badly matted if neglected, but Whisper doesn't look like she's neglected Confused

Aww poor puppy. I would have been really upset too.

Oh MY goodness! There is no way on god's green earth I would have paid for that.....manager there or not!

Your friend needs to go on her local craigslist and post pictures and she needs to write the corporate office of that shop. What if that was a show dog? Oh my....oh my

That poor dog!  There's a big difference between shaving a dog and having to spend more time on the coat.  If that was Honor, I would have killed the groomer.  Even if there was a mat that needed serious work, the fact that the groomer wanted to completely shave him should have been communicated.

She better hope and pray that her coat grows back in properly, and not a fuzzy woolly hard to handle mess. Your friend is going to have to buy a dog coat to keep her warm until her grows back, poor baby :(

Are they idiots???  OMG!  I can't believe they did that.  You know what though, it happens, it's happened to Willow--she had almost the same cut too!  Now, when I go to the groomer even if it's someone whose done her before I make sure I am very, very specific about what I want done.  And, if there is any question I want to be called.

It will probably take awhile, Willow's took about nine months to completely come back.  But, it did.

Edited to say--I interpret that first "shaved" picture differently--to me she looks stressed and like she's panting.
